Stock Photos for Listings Without a Photographer

A unit that arrives without pictures gets promo photos and stock imagery the moment it is decoded, and your own photos take over the moment you add them.

Stock photos for listings is an Inventory Link feature that adds promo photos and stock imagery to any vehicle that arrives without pictures, so a listing is never a blank grey box on your website, in the embeddable widget or in a text message. Your own photos lead when they exist, and the images follow the unit into the LeadLocate CRM and the vehicle insert button.

What stock photos for listings does

Stock photos for listings gives every vehicle in your inventory a picture from the moment it is decoded, using promo photos and stock imagery for the units that arrived without any, so nothing you advertise looks like a placeholder. Inventory Link does this automatically when a unit comes in, and a backfill pass does it for the listings that were already sitting there with no image. When your own photos exist they lead; the stock imagery is for the gap between a car landing on the lot and someone getting a camera to it.

That gap is where independents and brokers lose the most. A franchise store with a lot porter and a photographer on a schedule has the gap down to a day. An independent whose photographer is also the used car manager has units sitting a week with one dusk shot from a phone. A broker has no lot to photograph at all. In every case the unit is being advertised, on a website, in a widget, in a text, and the first image is what decides whether a shopper clicks.

The feature is part of the platform subscription rather than a photo service with its own invoice. It is the plain answer to a plain problem: a listing without a picture is a listing nobody opens.

How a dealership uses it on a normal day

Two trades come in on a Tuesday. The used car manager adds both in the dealer portal, the VIN decode fills in the year, make, model, trim and specifications, and because neither has a photo yet, both get promo photos and stock imagery for what they are. By the afternoon both units are live on the dealership website through the widget, on the inventory site the builder published, and in the CRM inventory list, each with a picture a shopper would actually click on. Nobody had to remember to hold them back until Thursday.

Wednesday a shopper texts about the silver one. The salesperson opens the composer, taps the vehicle insert button, picks the unit, and the vehicle card drops into the message with the stock photo, the price and the stock number. The shopper sees a real presentation of the car she asked about rather than a link to a third party site or a photo of a windshield sticker. She asks to see it Saturday.

Thursday the photographer comes. He shoots both trades, the manager opens Edit vehicle and photos in the portal, uploads the real set, and orders them so the best exterior leads. The stock imagery steps aside. Everywhere the unit appears, the widget, the inventory site, the CRM list, the next text the salesperson sends, the real photos are what show. The listing was never blank and it is now fully yours. That is the whole workflow, and the only manual step in it is the one you would have done anyway.

Where the photos live: the portal, the CRM and the phone

Photos are managed in the Inventory Link dealer portal under Edit vehicle and photos, which is where a listing gets its real images uploaded, reordered and finished. The promo photos and stock imagery are applied when a unit is added or imported, and the backfill pass catches the listings that were already in the inventory without a picture. The portal opens from the My Inventory button in the dock at the bottom of the LeadLocate CRM, with single sign on.

Inside the CRM, the Inventory item in the main menu shows the same list with the same images, and the vehicle insert button in every text and email composer attaches the unit with its photos and price, as MMS in a text or inline in an email. The send vehicles by text page covers that button in full.

On the phone, the LeadLocate app carries the inventory list with a detail sheet, so a salesperson on the lot sees the images the shopper saw. The dealer portal is in the app stores under the listing name MyInventory.Link for managers who prefer to upload the Thursday photos from the phone they took them on.

What it replaces, and what photos cost elsewhere

The alternatives are all expensive in one way or another. A photo service that comes to the lot charges per unit and comes on its schedule, not yours, so a car still sits unphotographed for the days in between. A stock image subscription is a separate bill and a manual lookup for every unit. The most common alternative is the one nobody budgets for: holding a listing back until it has photos, which costs the days the unit was on the lot and not for sale anywhere.

Stock photos for listings takes the holding period to zero and the lookup to none. The unit is decoded through VIN decode and the vehicle database, so the promo photos match what the vehicle actually is, and the images follow the record everywhere the platform shows it. The broader question of what vehicle photo management should cover, and what to demand of a vendor in a demo, is on our inventory photo management page; this page is the feature itself.

The cost is the plan you are already on. It is part of the platform subscription, month to month, and the pricing page lists what each plan includes.

The compliance angle: a picture of the model, then a picture of the car

Stock imagery shows what a vehicle of that year, make, model and trim looks like. It does not show the scratch on the rear bumper of the one on your lot, and no honest store wants a shopper to think it does. The way to use it is the way this feature is built to be used: as the picture that keeps a listing from being blank until your own photos exist, with your own photos taking the lead the moment they are uploaded. For a used unit where condition matters, get the real photos up as soon as you can, and let the stock imagery cover the days in between.

The decoded record underneath helps here too. Because the promo photos are chosen from the decoded trim, a shopper is not looking at a picture of a higher trim than the one you are selling. The listing says what the vehicle is, the image matches it, and the price and stock number are the ones your portal holds. That is a more defensible listing than a hand picked image from a search engine with a description typed from memory.

How to turn it on

There is no switch to find. Stock photos for listings runs whenever a vehicle enters Inventory Link without pictures, whether it came from a feed under Feeds, from an import of your own dealership website, from Add a vehicle in the portal, or from auto broker inventory mode. The backfill pass handles the listings that were already there. An inventory feed and DMS access are not required.

Your part is the part you would do anyway: when real photos exist, upload them under Edit vehicle and photos and order them so the best one leads. If you want a particular promo photo set for a make, or imagery presented in a way the standard listing does not cover, that is available on request, our team puts it in production for your dealership. To see it before you decide, the pre-recorded live demo shows a unit added without pictures and appearing with them, and the contact page reaches a person who will run your own inventory through it.

What to pair it with

Photos are only useful where a shopper sees them, so pair this feature with the places the platform shows a unit. The embeddable inventory widget puts the listings on the dealership website you already run; the inventory website builder publishes them on a site of their own and on per salesperson sites from a template; brand offer pages and the dealer page show them beside the manufacturer's offers. Every one of those reads the same inventory record, so the Thursday photos replace the stock imagery everywhere at once.

Inside the CRM, pair it with the vehicle insert button, which is where the picture does its most direct work: in the text a salesperson sends to a shopper who asked about a specific car. Pair it with In Store Now, so the salesperson sending that card knows the unit is physically on the lot. And for brokers, pair it with auto broker inventory mode, where there is no lot to photograph and the stock imagery is the listing. The all features page lists the rest.

What keeps working when we are down

Plainly: the images are additive. If our side is unreachable for an hour, your dealership website still shows your cars through your web vendor's own pages, your feed keeps flowing to everyone else who consumes it, and the vehicle cards already sent by text are in your customers' hands with their pictures. The real photos you uploaded are in your inventory record and come back with it.

When service returns, the widget, the inventory site and the CRM list show the images again, and the next import picks up any unit that arrived in between and gives it a picture. Nothing about how your store photographs a car has been moved onto our servers as a single point of failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when I upload my own photos?

They lead. Upload them under Edit vehicle and photos in the dealer portal, order them so the best exterior shot is first, and the stock imagery steps aside everywhere the unit appears: the widget, the inventory site, brand pages, the CRM list and the vehicle insert button.

Does it cover units that were already in my inventory without pictures?

Yes. A backfill pass gives promo photos and stock imagery to existing listings that have no image, not only to new arrivals.

How does it know which image fits the vehicle?

From the decoded record. Every unit goes through VIN decode and the vehicle database first, so the promo photos are chosen for the actual year, make, model and trim rather than guessed from a description.

Should I use stock imagery for a used car?

Use it to keep the listing from being blank until your real photos exist, then upload the real set. Stock imagery shows what the model looks like; your own photos show the condition of the car on your lot, which is what a used car shopper is buying.

Do the photos come through in text messages?

Yes. The vehicle insert button in every LeadLocate CRM composer attaches the unit with its photos and price as MMS in a text or inline in an email, and it uses whichever images the listing currently holds.

Is this an extra charge?

No. Stock photos for listings is part of the LeadLocate platform subscription, month to month. The pricing page lists the current plans.
