How to Connect or Buy a Domain in LeadLocate

Search for and buy a domain on the store's account, or watch one you own elsewhere, then put it on lead pages, salesperson sites and email.

Domains in LeadLocate CRM are handled from the Website menu. To buy one, open Domains, type the name into the search, pick an available version and purchase it on the store's account; it appears under My Domains. To connect a domain you already own elsewhere, add it under Domain Monitoring, or point it at the store site with POINT MY DOMAIN in the website editor.

Step by Step

  1. Open Domains

Sign in to LeadLocate CRM on the desktop, open the Website menu and go to Domains. The screen has the search at the top and My Domains, the list of what the store owns through the CRM, below it.

  2. Search for the name you want

In the field labeled Search for a domain, e.g. mydealership, type the name without the ending. The results show which versions are available and the price of each. Pick the one that reads best out loud; a listener has to remember it.

  3. Buy it on the store account

Choose the available version and complete the purchase. The domain is registered on the dealership's account, not on a personal card, and it appears under My Domains a few minutes later.

  4. Or connect a domain you already own

If the store's main domain is registered elsewhere, there is no need to move it. Under Domain Monitoring, in the field labeled Monitor a domain you own elsewhere, e.g. mybrand.com, enter the name and the CRM keeps an eye on it. To put that domain on the store's site, open the Website Editor, go to Branding and use POINT MY DOMAIN.

  5. Put the domain to work

Open a lead page's Lead Page URL Setting screen and pick the domain under Choose Domain, or point it at a salesperson's personal site. For email, open the domain from My Domains and add the records the email domain setup lists in the DNS editor.

Before you start

Buying a domain and editing its records belong to the roles the store sets in User Management, usually a Manager or Master Administrator; every user with the right role can pick a domain for a page. Have the store's payment method on the account, because the domain is bought at its listed price when you choose it and registered on the dealership's account. The search, the purchase, the DNS editor and the monitoring are part of every plan on the pricing page.

Know what the domain is for before you search. A short name for a radio spot, a name for a salesperson's personal site, or the store's main name for pages and email are different jobs. If the store's main domain is registered elsewhere, find out who holds the login; many dealerships discover a former marketing manager or an old agency does. Monitoring it from LeadLocate CRM is enough to start, and moving it in later is available on request.

What you should see

After a purchase, My Domains lists the new domain on the store's account. Open it and the DNS editor shows its records in a plain table with a save button; there is no separate control panel login and no second bill for editing a record. A domain added under Domain Monitoring shows in that list with its status, so the store knows if it stops resolving or is about to lapse.

Once you pick the domain under Choose Domain on a lead page, the page opens at that address in a browser, usually within minutes of purchase. After POINT MY DOMAIN in the website editor, the store site answers on the connected name. After you add the records the email domain setup lists, the authentication check on that screen turns green and Bulk Email and Email Automation go out under the store's own name.

If it did not work

The page does not open on the new domain. A domain bought minutes ago can take a short while to resolve across the internet. Wait, then reload. If it still fails, open the Lead Page URL Setting screen and confirm the domain is selected under Choose Domain and the page was saved after you picked it.

POINT MY DOMAIN did nothing for a domain owned elsewhere. The records at the company that holds the domain still point at the old site. Sign in there and set the records the branding screen shows, or move the domain into the CRM, which is available on request and our team handles for your dealership.

The email authentication check stays red. A record was typed with a stray space or added to the wrong domain. Open the domain from My Domains, compare each record with the list on the email domain setup screen character by character, save, and give it time to propagate before checking again.

Related tasks

Put the domain on a lead page so every event and offer has a short address that feeds the inbox. Authenticate it for email on the email domain authentication screen so campaigns go out under the store's name. Point a name at a salesperson's personal site and keep the asset on the dealership's account.

The custom domains and DNS feature page explains ownership, monitoring and the DNS editor in full. Every other walkthrough is in the help center, and if DNS is unfamiliar territory the contact page reaches a person who does this every week. Transfer out of a domain bought here is available on request, and our team handles it for your dealership; if you can take the domain with you, you own it.

Tips from the floor

Buy on the store's account, every time. A domain on a personal card leaves with the person. Pick names a listener can spell after hearing them once, and skip hyphens. Keep the main domain where it is until the store has time to move it properly, and monitor it from the CRM in the meantime so a lapse does not take the website down on a Saturday. Write down which domain points where; a year from now the list under My Domains will be longer than you expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy a domain from inside the CRM?

Yes. Under the Website menu, open Domains, search for the name, choose an available version and purchase it on the store's account. It appears under My Domains and can be used on lead pages, personal sites and email right away.

I already own my main domain elsewhere. Do I have to move it?

No. Add it under Domain Monitoring and the CRM watches it. Point it at the store site with POINT MY DOMAIN in the website editor, and move it in later on request if you decide to.

Who owns a domain bought through LeadLocate CRM?

Your dealership. It is registered on the store's account, listed under My Domains, and transfer out is available on request so you can take it with you.

Is there a fee to change DNS records?

No. Searching, buying, editing records and monitoring are part of every LeadLocate plan, month to month. The domain itself is bought at its listed price when you choose it.
