vAuto vs LeadLocate: Dealer Software Comparison

One prices and manages the cars you already own. The other finds the people who buy them. Comparing them is really a budget question.

vAuto is an inventory management and market pricing platform from Cox Automotive, built around appraising, pricing and turning used vehicles. LeadLocate is a lead generation platform with a full CRM built in. They are not substitutes, so this comparison is written for a dealer deciding where a fixed software budget does the most good this year.

Start by admitting these are different products

Search results put these two side by side because both are sold to used car operations and both get described as dealership software. That is where the similarity ends, and treating them as alternatives will lead you to a bad decision.

vAuto works on the inventory you own or are about to own. What to buy, what to pay, what to ask, how it is priced against the live market, and how fast it is turning. Its center of gravity is the used vehicle and the market data around it.

LeadLocate works on the people. Where the opportunities come from, who owns each one, how quickly they are contacted, what happens on touch six, how the deal gets desked, and whether the store can see any of it in reporting. Its center of gravity is the customer record and the communication around it.

Most stores that put them in the same conversation are not choosing between two solutions to one problem. They are choosing which of two real problems to fund first. That is a legitimate question and it deserves a straight answer rather than a feature grid, so this page tries to give you one.

Features and packaging change on both sides, so verify current capability, pricing and contract terms directly with each vendor rather than relying on any comparison page, including this one.

What vAuto is built for

vAuto is part of Cox Automotive and has been in the used vehicle market for a long time. Its reputation is built on live market data and the discipline that data enforces: pricing to the market rather than to cost, appraising with visibility into what similar units are actually doing, watching days supply, and holding the store to a turn policy instead of an opinion.

Publicly, the family covers used vehicle inventory management and pricing, wholesale sourcing, new vehicle inventory work and reconditioning workflow. Stores that run it well tend to describe the benefit the same way: it removes argument from the used car department. When the market data says a unit is priced above where comparable cars are selling, the conversation is short.

That is a real and specific value, and it is not something a CRM does. If your problem is that you overpay at appraisal, sit on aged units, or price by gut, then a lead platform will not fix it and you should be looking at inventory tooling rather than at us.

Verify current module names, data coverage and contract terms with the vendor, since packaging in this category changes and we will not guess at it on your behalf.

What LeadLocate is built for

LeadLocate started from the demand side. It is a lead generation platform with a full CRM built around it, sold month to month to dealerships and to individual salespeople.

On the lead side you choose a territory around your store, and leads inside that zone come to you exclusively rather than being resold to three other rooftops. There are two families. Inbound buyer leads from in market shoppers, which arrive as a mix of VIN specific inquiries and open shoppers describing what they want. And opt in seller leads: local owners who filled out a vehicle offer request and asked to be contacted about selling their car. Nothing is filtered or scored. Every submitted lead in your zone is delivered, and lead problems are handled by post delivery replacement review rather than by a quality claim made up front.

On the CRM side, the surface is wider than most dealers expect. Lead management with distribution rules, SMS and MMS with RCS and SMS fallback, click to call with a VoIP softphone, call recording with transcription, voicemail drop, email with a real inbox and composer, bulk email, automations and follow up processes, drip campaigns with a drip editor, appointments and reminders, DealTracker desking covering loan and lease with a fifty state tax matrix, deal jackets, lead pages, personal salesperson websites, a free live chat widget, customer facing deal pages with e signature, and three layers of reporting.

Plus tools most dealers do not know a CRM can include: an email validator, a phone validator, document AI for VIN scanning, and an IVR and call routing stack through AutoMail.

Choose vAuto if

We would rather point you at the right product than win a deal you regret. Fund the inventory side first if any of these describe your store.

  • Your aged inventory number is the thing keeping you awake, and units are sitting past sixty days regularly.
  • You suspect you overpay at appraisal, and appraisals are currently a judgment call rather than a data call.
  • Pricing decisions in your store generate arguments, and you want a market number to end them.
  • Your used car manager is strong at people and weak at data, or the other way round, and you need the tooling to cover the gap.
  • You buy heavily at auction and want structured sourcing rather than instinct.
  • You already have a lead flow and a CRM that your team actually uses.

If that last point is not true, be honest about it, because perfect pricing on a car nobody is calling about does not sell it.

Choose LeadLocate if

The case for funding the demand side first is strongest when several of these are true at once.

  • Your inventory turns acceptably but your traffic is thin, and the floor spends more time waiting than working.
  • You are buying leads from one vendor and paying another for CRM, and stitching them together is your own unpaid job.
  • Leads are being worked for two days and then abandoned, and nobody can tell you the response time on last month's opportunities.
  • You want acquisition traffic from local owners who asked to be contacted, rather than depending entirely on auction.
  • You are independent or a used operation and want one platform rather than four subscriptions.
  • You do not have, or do not want to depend on, an inventory feed or access to the dealer management system you run. Neither is required here.
  • Contract length matters to you and you want the option to leave if we stop earning it.

The acquisition angle is worth a closer look if sourcing is your constraint. Our seller leads page explains how opt in seller leads work, and vehicle acquisition software covers the wider picture.

Running both, and the seam between them

Plenty of stores run an inventory platform and a lead platform together, and that is the arrangement we see most often in the larger operations. The two sit either side of the same car without much overlap.

The seam worth thinking about is data. Your inventory system holds the truth about the vehicle: cost, days in stock, market position, recon status. Your CRM holds the truth about the customer: who asked about what, when, and what happened next. Neither is much use without the other when a manager is deciding whether to move on a price.

Inventory Link ingests a dealer feed when one is available and can present those vehicles through a public inventory API and per salesperson inventory sites, which is how a shopper ends up looking at your actual cars rather than a generic page. That does not replace market pricing analytics and we would not claim it does. What it means practically is that our side works with your feed when you have one and works without it when you do not, so the customer side is never blocked by a feed problem.

On the acquisition seam, an inventory platform tells you what you should buy. Opt in seller leads give you a source of cars to buy that is not the auction. Those are complementary rather than competing, and stores that run both usually describe them that way. See inventory feed management for the feed side.

If you can only fund one this year

This is the real question behind most searches for a comparison like this, so here is a straight framework rather than a sales answer.

Look at your two constraint numbers. First, days supply and average age of your used inventory. Second, opportunities per salesperson per month and your average time to first response. Whichever of those is clearly worse is where the money should go, and it is usually obvious once both are written on the same page.

A store sitting on aged units with steady traffic has an inventory problem. Buying more leads pours water into a bucket with a hole in it. Fund the inventory tooling.

A store turning cars quickly with a thin pipeline has a demand problem. Better appraisal discipline will not create phone calls. Fund the lead and CRM side.

A store where nobody can answer either question has a measurement problem, which is cheaper to fix than either and should come first. Start by counting response times by hand for a week. It is unpleasant and it is usually the most valuable week of the year.

We cannot guarantee results from any of it, and any vendor telling you what a platform will do to your unit count is guessing about your market and your team. What we will do is show you the tools running on your actual lead flow so the decision is made on evidence.

Questions to ask both vendors, including us

Take these into every demo. The answers separate vendors faster than a feature list does.

What is the total monthly cost with every module I actually need, and what is the price at renewal rather than in year one? What is the contract length and what is the cancellation process? What exactly can I export if I leave, in what format, and does it include history? Who owns the data? How long does implementation take and what does my store have to supply? What does support look like at 6pm on a Saturday? What is the single thing your product is worst at, and what kind of store should not buy it?

For us specifically, add: are the leads exclusive to my store, how is my territory defined, what happens when a lead is bad, and what does the platform require from my inventory feed or the dealer management system I run. The answers are none required, replacement review, an exclusive zone you choose, and nothing.

Write the answers down. Vendors comfortable being pinned down in writing tend to be the ones still worth having in year three. If you want ours answered live, the demo is the fastest route, pricing is on the pricing page, and you can contact us or call 844-376-2274 if you would rather just ask.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LeadLocate a replacement for vAuto?

No. We do not do market based inventory pricing, appraisal analytics, days supply management or reconditioning workflow. If those are your problem, fund inventory tooling. We cover lead generation, communications, follow up, desking and reporting.

Can we run both together?

Yes, and larger stores commonly do. They sit either side of the same vehicle: one holds the truth about the car and the market, the other holds the truth about the customer and what happened after they asked.

Do you need an inventory feed to work?

No. Inventory Link ingests a feed when one is available and can present your actual vehicles through a public inventory API and per salesperson sites, but neither a feed nor DMS access is required to operate the platform.

How do seller leads compare to buying at auction?

They are a different source rather than a replacement. Opt in seller leads are local owners who filled out a vehicle offer request and asked to be contacted. Nothing is filtered, and we cannot promise how many will transact.

Which should a store fund first?

Compare two numbers: days supply and average age of used inventory against opportunities per salesperson and time to first response. Fund whichever is clearly worse. If you cannot answer either, measure for a week before spending anything.

Do you offer month to month terms?

Yes. Month to month with no long term contract, US only. CRM Only starts at $199 if you have your own lead sources, and plans that include exclusive local leads start at $799. Verify vAuto terms with that vendor.
