Tekion Alternative for Car Dealerships

Tekion is one platform covering several categories at once. Before you shop an alternative, work out which of those categories is actually bothering you.

Tekion sells a single cloud platform that includes a dealer management system alongside CRM, service and other modules. LeadLocate is not a dealer management system and does not replace that part. If your complaint is the lead, communication and follow up layer, that is the part we do replace, month to month with no long term contract.

The honest disclosure, first

We are not a dealer management system and we do not sell one. No general ledger, no accounts payable or receivable, no payroll, no bank reconciliation, no deal posting to accounting, no parts inventory, no repair orders, no technician time, no title and registration work. If any of those are the reason you are shopping, we are not your answer and we would rather tell you now than three demos from now.

This matters more with Tekion than with most vendors on a comparison page, because Tekion is sold as one platform spanning several categories at once. Asking for a Tekion alternative can mean six different things depending on which part of it you are unhappy with.

So separate the question before you shop. If you need different accounting and operations software, you are looking for a different DMS, and our guide to switching dealer management systems covers that shortlist and its real cost. If your frustration is that leads are not worked, follow up dies after two touches, or you are paying separately for lead generation on top of everything else, that is the layer we replace and this page is about that.

Plenty of stores end up doing both, in that order, and there is no reason the two decisions have to happen in the same quarter.

Why dealers go looking in the first place

In our experience the search starts from one of four places, and only three of them are solved by changing vendors.

Bundling. One platform covering everything is a genuine advantage until it is not. You end up with modules you do not use, a single renewal conversation covering your entire operation, and less leverage than you would have with separate vendors. Some stores prefer the consolidation. Others find that one vendor holding accounting, CRM and service at once is more concentration than they want.

Cost and contract structure. The price at renewal, the term length, or paying for surface area the store does not touch. A real reason to look.

You are still buying leads separately. A platform can cover your operations and still leave you paying another vendor for lead generation, then paying with your own time to make the two talk to each other. Consolidating that is a real reason to look.

Process problems attributed to software. Response times measured in hours, follow up that stops after one attempt, salespeople working off personal phones. Changing systems will not fix this. A new system makes it more visible, which genuinely helps, but the repair is management. Be clear eyed here, because switching to solve a discipline problem is how a store ends up switching again in eighteen months.

What Tekion is built for

Tekion is a newer entrant than the long established dealer management systems, and it was designed as a cloud native single platform rather than as a set of products stitched together over decades. That is its central pitch: one system, one data model, covering the store rather than one department of it.

The obvious strengths that follow from that design are a modern interface, mobile access, and the absence of the integration seams that appear when accounting, CRM and service come from three different vendors. For a franchise store with the staff to administer a platform of that scope, and with manufacturer requirements to satisfy, there is a serious argument for it.

Capability, packaging, pricing and contract terms change over time, and we are not going to guess at any of them. Verify current details directly with the vendor rather than relying on any comparison page, including this one. We will not invent their pricing and we are not going to characterize their support, because we do not run on it and secondhand accounts are not evidence.

What we can say without guessing is what category it occupies, which is a full retail platform including a DMS. That is a different category than ours and the comparison below is written to make the difference legible rather than to score points.

What LeadLocate is built for

LeadLocate started as a lead generation platform and grew a full CRM around it. It is sold to dealerships and to individual salespeople on month to month terms, and it does not require a DMS integration or an inventory feed to operate.

The lead side delivers exclusive local leads. You choose a territory around your store and requests inside that zone come to you rather than being resold to three other dealerships. There are two families: inbound buyer leads from shoppers in the market, and opt in seller leads from local owners who filled out a vehicle offer request and asked to be contacted about selling. Nothing is scored or held back. Every submitted request in your zone is delivered, and problems are handled by post delivery replacement review rather than by a claim made up front.

The CRM side covers lead management with distribution rules and history, SMS and MMS with threading, RCS with SMS fallback, a click to call dialer with a VoIP softphone, call recording with transcription, voicemail drop, email with a real inbox and composer, bulk email, automations, follow up processes, drip sequences with an editor, appointments and reminders, desking across loan and lease with a fifty state tax matrix, lead pages, personal salesperson websites, a free live chat widget, customer facing deal pages with e-signature, and three layers of reporting.

There are also tools most dealers do not expect a CRM to have in house: an email validator, a phone validator, and document AI that reads documents and scans VINs from a phone camera.

Stay with Tekion if

We would rather you stay than switch and switch back. Any of these is a reason to keep what you have.

  • Your accounting and operations run on it, and separating the CRM would break workflows your controller and service department depend on.
  • You are a franchise point where the manufacturer specifies or strongly prefers certified CRM participation and program compliance affects your money.
  • You went through a platform conversion recently. Doing another one before the organization has recovered costs more than the problem you are trying to solve.
  • The single vendor arrangement is deliberate, and you value one number to call over having leverage with several vendors.
  • Your complaint is really about process rather than product, in which case the fix is on your floor and a change of system will not deliver it.

If you are past all of that and genuinely want out of the platform entirely, our page on switching from Tekion walks the migration honestly, including the parts that hurt.

Add or switch to LeadLocate if

The case is strongest when several of these are true together.

  • You want leads and CRM from one vendor on one bill rather than paying separately and stitching the two together.
  • You want exclusive local leads rather than shared internet leads that three stores are calling at the same time.
  • You are independent, or a used car operation, or buy here pay here, and a full franchise retail platform is surface area you pay for and do not use.
  • Contract length is a sticking point and you want the ability to leave if we stop earning it.
  • You want individual salespeople able to run on the platform, with their own personal sites and mobile access, not just the store.
  • You would rather not depend on a DMS integration or an inventory feed. Neither is required here.

Worth noting that this does not have to be a replacement. Plenty of stores keep their existing platform for accounting and operations and run the lead and communication layer alongside it. Our DMS and CRM integration page covers how that arrangement usually looks in practice.

What a change costs beyond the invoice

The subscription difference is almost never the biggest number, and the ones that hurt do not appear on any quote.

  1. Data. Establish what you can export, in what format, and whether communication history comes with it, before you give notice. Your leverage is highest in the minute before signature and lowest during an exit.
  2. Overlap. Budget for paying two vendors for a few weeks. Cutting over with no overlap is the most reliable way to lose leads during a transition.
  3. Adoption. The real cost. Expect a productivity dip for two to four weeks while habits are relearned, and budget management attention rather than only training hours.
  4. Integrations. Everything that currently posts into your system has to be repointed: website forms, third party lead providers, chat, phone. Build that list before you start.
  5. Reporting continuity. Historical numbers stay behind unless you pull them. Export the reports you will want to compare against next year while you still have access.

Our CRM migration checklist works through this in order and is written to be used with any vendor, including against us.

Questions to ask both vendors, including us

Take these into every demo. The answers separate vendors faster than any feature list.

What is the total monthly cost with every module I actually need, and what is the price at renewal? What is the contract length and how does cancellation work? Exactly what can I export if I leave, in what format, and does it include communication history? Who owns the customer data? How long is implementation and what does the store have to supply? What does support look like at 6pm on a Saturday? If leads are included, are they exclusive to my store and how is my territory defined? What happens when a lead is bad?

Write the answers down. Vendors comfortable being pinned down in writing tend to be the ones still worth having in year three.

Our own answers, for the record: month to month with no long term contract, CRM Only from $199 and lead programs from $799 as shown on the pricing page, exclusive territory around your store, and post delivery replacement review when a lead has a problem. We do not guarantee lead volume or close rates, because those depend on your market and your team, and any vendor promising otherwise is selling something other than software. See it running on the demo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LeadLocate a replacement for Tekion?

Only for part of it. We replace the lead, CRM, communication, follow up and desking layer. We are not a dealer management system, so accounting, parts, service operations and title work stay wherever they are today.

Can we run LeadLocate alongside our existing platform?

Yes, and many stores do exactly that. Keep the dealer management system you run for accounting and operations, and use LeadLocate for leads, communication and follow up. No DMS integration or inventory feed is required to operate.

Does LeadLocate include leads or just software?

Both are available. CRM Only starts at $199 a month if you already have lead sources. Plans that include exclusive local leads start at $799. Current figures are on the pricing page.

Are you an OEM certified CRM?

No. If your manufacturer specifies or strongly prefers certified CRM participation and program money depends on it, confirm those requirements before you consider any change.

How does your pricing compare to Tekion?

We will not quote another vendor's pricing, because packaging changes and secondhand figures are usually wrong. Ask them directly for the total with every module you need, plus the renewal price. Ours is on the pricing page and it is month to month.

How long does it take to get running?

Far less than a full platform implementation, because there is less to configure. The realistic constraint is team adoption rather than setup, which is why we suggest piloting one store or one team before rolling wider.
