AutoManager Alternative for Car Dealerships

An honest look at when it makes sense to move, when you are better off adding rather than replacing, and what to check first.

Dealers look for an AutoManager alternative when they want lead generation and CRM from one vendor, faster texting and calling tools, or simpler contract terms. LeadLocate is a lead generation platform with a full CRM built in, sold month to month. Whether it replaces or sits alongside what you run depends on which of their products you use.

Start by naming which product you are actually unhappy with

AutoManager is a long established software company serving independent dealers, and it is publicly known for a family of products rather than a single application. Stores typically run some combination of a back end system for inventory, deals and paperwork, a desking piece, and a website product. Which ones a given store uses varies a great deal.

That matters because the phrase looking for an alternative usually means one specific thing is not working, and the rest is fine. We hear four versions of it. The store wants better texting and calling and is doing follow up on personal cell phones. The store has no reliable source of new opportunities and is buying shared leads that three competitors are calling at the same time. The store finds the interface dated and the sales team avoids it. Or the store simply wants clearer terms.

Only the first two are solved by us directly. Write down which one is yours before you sit through a demo, because a vendor will happily sell you a replacement for the parts that were working fine. Features and packaging change over time, so verify anything about their current product line directly with the vendor rather than relying on any comparison page, this one included.

What AutoManager is built for

Their audience is the independent and used car dealer, and their strength is running the mechanics of that business. Inventory records, deal paperwork, desking, forms and the day to day administration of a small to mid sized store, plus a website product for stores that want the vehicle listings and the software from one company.

There is real value in that consolidation. A single vendor for your inventory records, your paperwork and your website means one support number and one place where the vehicle data lives. For a fifty car a month independent with a small team, that simplicity is worth a lot, and it is a legitimate reason to stay.

Longevity matters too. A vendor that has served this segment for many years knows the workflow of an independent store, including the parts that are unglamorous and specific: forms by state, wholesale movement, floorplan tracking on the store's own terms, buy here pay here mechanics for the dealers who do it. That kind of accumulated fit is not easy to replicate and should not be dismissed because a newer interface looks nicer.

Confirm current capability, packaging, pricing and contract terms with them directly. We do not publish competitor pricing and we will not guess at it.

What LeadLocate is built for

We came at the market from the opposite direction. LeadLocate is a lead generation platform first, with a full CRM built around it, sold to dealerships and to individual salespeople on month to month terms.

The lead side delivers exclusive local opportunities. You define a territory around your store, and leads inside that zone come to you rather than being resold to three other dealerships. Two families exist: inbound buyer leads from in market shoppers, and opt in seller leads from local owners who filled out a vehicle offer request and asked to be contacted about selling their car. Nothing is filtered or scored, there are pre-screening questions at capture, and every submitted lead in your zone is delivered exclusively. Problems are handled by post delivery replacement review rather than by a quality promise made in advance.

The CRM side is deep on communication because that is where independent stores lose deals. SMS and MMS with real threading, RCS messaging with automatic SMS fallback, click to call with a VoIP softphone, call recording with transcription, voicemail drop, an email inbox and composer, bulk email, automations and follow up processes, drip campaigns, appointments and reminders. Desking covers loan and lease with a fifty state tax matrix, semimonthly frequency, trade credit caps and three lease tax methods. Add lead pages, personal salesperson websites, a free live chat widget, customer facing deal pages with e-signature, an email validator, a phone validator, and three reporting layers.

Where we are not a fit: we are not a dealer management system. No general ledger, no accounts payable, no title and registration work, no parts or repair orders.

Choose AutoManager if

Stay where you are if any of these describe your store. We would rather say so now than have you switch and switch back in eight months.

  • Your back office runs on their system for deals, forms and inventory records, and the paperwork side is working. We do not replace that.
  • You want inventory, paperwork and your website from a single vendor with one support number, and that simplicity is worth more to you than best of breed pieces.
  • Your state specific forms and deal documents are set up and correct. Rebuilding that is real work with real risk.
  • You are a buy here pay here store whose collections and account servicing live in their system.
  • You already have lead sources you are satisfied with and do not need a vendor to supply opportunities.

Choose LeadLocate if

The case for us is strongest when several of these are true at once.

  • You need a reliable source of local opportunities and you are tired of buying the same shared lead three competitors bought.
  • Your follow up happens on personal cell phones, which means the conversation and the customer leave when the salesperson does.
  • You want the acquisition side as well as the retail side. Opt in seller leads are explained on the seller leads page.
  • Your team avoids the current system because it takes too many clicks, and your reporting has become fiction as a result.
  • Contract length is a sticking point and you want the ability to leave if we stop earning it.
  • You want individual salespeople to run on the platform, not only the store.
  • You do not have, or do not want to depend on, an inventory feed or a connection to the system your back office runs. Neither is required to operate.

The overlap question: you may be adding, not replacing

This is the most useful thing on the page for most readers. A large share of the stores that come to us keep their existing operations software and run us alongside it.

The split that works: their system keeps doing inventory records, deal paperwork, forms and whatever accounting or account servicing you rely on. We handle the customer side, meaning where opportunities come from, how the team communicates, how follow up runs, how the desk works a payment for the customer, and what the reporting says at the end of the month.

That arrangement is possible because we do not require a connection to the system your back office runs. Most vendors will tell you a parallel setup is messy, and it can be if you try to keep two systems saying the same thing. It is not messy when each one owns a different job and everyone knows which is which. The rule that keeps it clean: one system is the record of truth for the customer conversation, and one is the record of truth for the paperwork. Do not let them argue.

If you decide you do want to leave their platform entirely, the sequencing is covered on our switching from AutoManager guide, which is written to be used with any replacement vendor rather than only ours.

What a switch actually costs beyond the invoice

The subscription difference is usually the smallest number in a software change. The costs that hurt are the ones nobody quotes.

  1. Data. Getting customer records, notes and communication history out in a usable format. Establish this before you give notice, and ask specifically what is included.
  2. Forms and documents. If you are moving a system that produces your deal paperwork, this is the largest risk item and it deserves its own timeline. It is also the main reason many stores keep the incumbent for paperwork and change only the customer layer.
  3. Overlap. Plan on paying two vendors for a few weeks. Cutting over with no overlap is how stores lose opportunities during a change.
  4. Adoption. Expect a dip for two to four weeks while people relearn habits. Budget management attention, not just training hours.
  5. Reporting continuity. Your historical numbers stay behind unless you export them. Pull what you will want to compare against next year while you still have access.

Comparable independent dealer platforms are covered on our DealerCenter alternative and Frazer alternative pages if you are shortlisting more than one.

Questions to ask both vendors, including us

Take these into every demo. The answers separate vendors faster than a feature list does.

What is the total monthly cost with every module I actually need, and what is the price at renewal? What is the contract length and what is the cancellation process? What exactly can I export if I leave, in what format, and does it include communication history? Who owns the customer data? How long does implementation take and what do I have to supply? What does support look like at six on a Saturday evening? If leads are included, are they exclusive to my store and how is my territory defined? What happens when a lead is bad?

Write the answers down. Vendors comfortable being pinned down in writing tend to be the ones still worth having in year three. We cannot guarantee results and neither can anyone else honestly, because the variables that decide it are your market, your inventory and whether somebody follows up. What we can do is show you the platform running on real records and price it so that staying is a monthly decision. The demo is the fastest way to see it, and you can contact us if you would rather just ask.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LeadLocate a direct replacement for AutoManager?

Not entirely. We replace the customer side: lead generation, communication, follow up, desking and reporting. We are not a dealer management system, so inventory records, deal paperwork, forms and accounting stay wherever they are today unless you move them to another vendor.

Can we keep our current system and add LeadLocate?

Yes, and many stores do. No integration or inventory feed is required to operate, so the two can run side by side with one owning the customer conversation and the other owning the paperwork. Keep the boundary clear and it stays clean.

Does LeadLocate include leads or just software?

Both are available. CRM Only starts at $199 a month if you have your own lead sources. Plans that include exclusive local leads start at $799, with seller side and hybrid plans above that. See the pricing page for current figures.

Are the leads exclusive to my store?

Yes. You choose a territory around your store and every submitted lead in that zone is delivered to you and not resold to other dealerships. Nothing is filtered or scored, and lead problems are handled by post delivery replacement review.

What about our state specific deal forms?

Those live in the system that produces your paperwork, not in ours. If your forms are set up and working, that is a strong argument for keeping the incumbent for the back office and changing only the customer layer.

How long does it take to get running?

Far less than an enterprise implementation, because there is less to configure and no required integration. The realistic constraint is your team's adoption, which is why we suggest running one team on it for three to four weeks before expanding.
