Autotrader vs LeadLocate: An Honest Comparison
Two products that get compared constantly and are not actually competing for the same job. Here is how to tell which one your store is short of.
The comparison people think they are making
When a dealer types this comparison into a search bar, the real question underneath is almost always one of three. Am I paying too much for the leads I am getting? Why am I always the fourth store calling the same person? Or, less often, do I need both of these at once?
None of those are answered by a feature grid, because these two products are not the same category. Autotrader is advertising placement on a shopping destination. LeadLocate is lead supply plus the software to work it. Comparing them straight across is like comparing a billboard to a phone system. Both can be worth the money, and each fails in a completely different way when it is not.
What makes the comparison worth writing anyway is that both come out of the same budget, and most stores have a fixed number for advertising and software combined. So the practical question is not which product is better. It is which one your store is currently short of, and whether the money you are already spending is producing units you can point at.
We will lay out both sides and then give you a way to test rather than argue. Autotrader features, packaging and pricing change over time and are negotiated store by store, so treat every claim about them here as a starting point to verify with the vendor.
What Autotrader does well
Autotrader has been a vehicle shopping destination in the United States for decades and now sits within Cox Automotive alongside Kelley Blue Book, Dealer.com and VinSolutions. The product is reach. Shoppers arrive already comparing, filtering by price, distance and body style, and your inventory appears among the results.
Reach is the hardest thing for an individual store to build. Your own website is found by people who already know your name. A national shopping site is found by people who do not, which is how a large share of used inventory gets discovered at all. If you carry unusual units, or you are in a thin local market, or you need buyers willing to drive an hour, that audience is doing work you cannot replicate with a local campaign.
There is a second, quieter benefit worth naming: merchandising discipline. Stores that advertise on a competitive marketplace tend to keep better photos, better descriptions and more honest pricing, because the comparison is right there on the page. That habit pays off everywhere else too.
The structural limit is not a flaw, it is the model. You are renting attention on a site where every store in your market appears, and the shopper chooses who to contact. Most contact several. Speed of response, not placement, decides who gets the appointment.
What LeadLocate does well
LeadLocate is built around one idea: the contact should belong to you, and the software to work it should be in the same place. You define a territory with the Leads Manager zone editor and every submitted lead inside that zone is delivered to you exclusively rather than resold.
Two lead families run through that zone. Inbound buyer leads are in market shoppers, a mix of VIN specific interest and open shoppers describing what they want in general terms. Opt in seller leads are local owners who filled out a vehicle offer request and asked a dealership to contact them about selling, which is a used car supply channel that costs no auction fee and no transport. Nothing is filtered, scored or quality checked. We ask pre screening questions at capture and deliver everything that comes in, with problems handled by post delivery replacement review.
The CRM around it is not a light add on. Lead management and distribution rules, SMS and MMS with RCS and SMS fallback, click to call with a VoIP softphone, call recording with transcription, voicemail drop, email with a real inbox and composer, bulk email, automations and follow up processes, drip campaigns, appointments and reminders, desking for loan and lease with a fifty state tax matrix, lead pages, personal salesperson websites, a free live chat widget, plus an email validator and a phone validator most dealers are surprised to find in a CRM at all.
Side by side
| Autotrader | LeadLocate | |
|---|---|---|
| What you buy | Placement in front of browsing shoppers | Exclusive leads in a zone, plus the CRM |
| Audience | National shopping traffic | Local territory you define |
| Lead exclusivity | Shoppers commonly contact several stores | Delivered to your store alone |
| CRM and communications | Sold separately within the Cox family | Included: SMS, RCS, VoIP calling, email, automations |
| Desking | Not part of the marketplace product | Included, loan and lease, fifty state tax matrix |
| Acquisition of used cars | Verify current trade and offer tools with the vendor | Opt in seller leads from local owners |
| Inventory feed required | Yes, the listings are the product | No, though Inventory Link ingests one if you have it |
| Individual salespeople | Sold to the store | Store or individual salesperson plans |
| Contract | Verify current terms with the vendor | Month to month, no long term contract |
| Entry price | Verify with the vendor | CRM Only from $199/mo; lead plans from $799/mo |
Both products change. Verify anything that will drive your decision with each vendor directly.
Where LeadLocate does not win
A comparison page that only lists our strengths is worthless to you, so here is the other column.
We are not a marketplace and we do not sell you national discovery. If nobody within your trade area is searching for what is sitting on your lot, a territory around your store will not fix that, and a shopping site with a big audience will do more for those units than we will.
We are not an OEM certified CRM and we are not a dealer management system. There is no general ledger, no repair order management, no parts, no title and registration work. Our integration depth with a given DMS is more limited than an enterprise CRM built around that integration. A franchise point whose manufacturer specifies CRM requirements needs to confirm those requirements before considering us, because program compliance affects your money.
And we cannot guarantee lead counts, close rates, credit quality or sales results. Nothing about a consumer's willingness to buy is in our control. Any vendor promising a number on that is selling you something they cannot deliver, and you should hold us to the same standard you hold them.
Choose Autotrader if, choose LeadLocate if
Autotrader is the better spend when
- Discovery is your constraint and local awareness is not enough to move your inventory.
- You carry specialty or high line units that need buyers from well outside your radius.
- You already run inside the Cox stack and the cross product reporting is producing real decisions.
- You have plenty of lead volume and your true problem is follow up discipline. Software will expose that problem, not solve it.
LeadLocate is the better spend when
- You want the contact to be yours, not a race with four other stores on the same listing.
- You are paying separately for leads and for CRM and gluing them together yourself.
- You need used car supply and want it from local owners who asked to be contacted rather than from an auction lane.
- You want salespeople to have their own lead pages and websites rather than everything running through one store account.
- You want out of long contracts and prefer a vendor that has to earn the renewal every month.
How to run a fair test between them
Arguing about this in a manager meeting is a waste of a month. Testing takes the same month and produces an answer.
Keep your marketplace package exactly as it is. Add a zone around your store for thirty to sixty days. Then measure both sources on identical terms, which means every lead lands in one system with its source attached and every outcome is recorded against it. If leads from either source are being worked out of somebody's personal phone, the test is already invalid.
Measure four things. Time to first response, because it predicts everything downstream. Touches per lead before the trail goes cold, which tells you whether your cadence is real or theoretical. Appointments set. And units sold with that source attributed. Then divide each invoice by units sold and compare cost per unit, not cost per lead. A cheap lead that never closes is the most expensive thing in your budget. Our page on marketing attribution covers how to make those numbers trustworthy.
Sixty days is enough to see a pattern and short enough that a wrong answer costs you very little. Month to month pricing on our side exists precisely so this kind of test is possible without a signature that outlives the experiment.
What to ask both vendors before deciding
Take the same list into both conversations. Symmetry is the point; a question only worth asking one vendor is usually a question you already know the answer to.
What is the all in monthly cost with everything I need, and what does it become at renewal? What is the term, and what does cancellation actually require? If leads are included, are they exclusive, and how is my territory drawn? What happens when a lead is bad, and who decides? What can I export if I leave, in what format, and does communication history come with it? Who owns the customer data? Which integrations cost extra and who maintains them when they break? What does support look like on a Saturday evening?
Ask us these too. Our answers are on the pricing page and in the demo, and if you would rather skip the pitch and ask directly whether we fit your store, contact us and we will tell you when we do not. We would rather lose the sale than have you cancel in ninety days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a fair comparison if they are different categories?
It is fair as a budget comparison, which is how most stores actually face it. Both come out of the same advertising and software money. The useful question is which capability your store is short of, then which spend produces units you can point at.
Can we run Autotrader and LeadLocate at the same time?
Yes, and most stores that try us keep their marketplace package running. Nothing about our platform requires you to cancel anything. Run both for sixty days and compare cost per sold unit rather than cost per lead.
Are LeadLocate leads exclusive?
Yes. You define a territory and every submitted lead inside it is delivered to your store alone rather than resold. Nothing is filtered or scored, and lead problems are handled through post delivery replacement review.
Does LeadLocate advertise my inventory?
It can. Inventory Link ingests a live feed with VIN, trim, mileage, price and photos and advertises your actual vehicles. But a feed is not required to operate, which is why individual salespeople and brokers can use the platform.
Is LeadLocate an OEM certified CRM?
No. If your manufacturer specifies or strongly prefers a certified CRM and program compliance affects your money, confirm those requirements before you consider switching. That is a genuine reason to stay where you are.
What does the CRM include if we only want the software?
CRM Only starts at $199 a month and includes lead management, SMS and RCS messaging, VoIP calling with recording and transcription, email, automations and follow up processes, appointments, desking with a fifty state tax matrix, lead pages and reporting.
Run both for sixty days and let the numbers decide
Keep your marketplace spend where it is. Add a zone around your store, work it in one system, and compare cost per sold unit. Month to month, cancel whenever it stops paying.
