Autotrader Alternative for Car Dealerships

Where marketplace advertising earns its keep, where it does not, and what a lead source with a full CRM attached does differently.

Dealers shopping an Autotrader alternative usually want lead flow that is not shared with the store down the street. LeadLocate is not a vehicle marketplace. It delivers exclusive local buyer leads and opt in seller leads with a full CRM behind them, sold month to month, and plenty of stores run both together.

Start by naming what you are actually replacing

A marketplace subscription and a lead generation platform are not the same purchase, and stores get into trouble when they treat them as interchangeable line items on the same advertising budget. One is placement on a shopping destination. The other is a supply of contacts plus the software to work them. Cancel the first expecting the second to cover it and you will feel the gap inside a month.

A vehicle marketplace puts your inventory in front of people who came to a website to browse cars. You pay for exposure, and the leads you get are the shoppers who chose to click your vehicle. A lead platform works from the other direction. It captures people through its own landing pages and campaigns and then hands you the contact along with the tools to reach them.

So here is the honest starting position. LeadLocate is not a marketplace and does not pretend to be one. If your question is purely where do I put my inventory so browsing shoppers can find it, we are not a like for like swap. If your question is where does my next contact come from, and what happens in the eight days after it arrives, that is a conversation worth having. Most stores that call us are asking the second question while paying for the first.

What Autotrader is built to do

Autotrader is one of the longest running vehicle shopping destinations in the United States and it sits inside the Cox Automotive family alongside Kelley Blue Book, Dealer.com and VinSolutions. What a dealer buys there is audience: people who arrived already in the mode of comparing vehicles, filtering by price, distance, body style and payment.

That has genuine value and it deserves to be said plainly rather than argued with. A marketplace gives you reach you cannot manufacture on your own. A shopper thirty miles out who has never heard of your store is not going to find your website by accident, and a national shopping site is how a large share of used inventory gets discovered in the first place. Placement tiers, merchandising features, reporting and the surrounding Cox products all change over time, and pricing is negotiated store by store, so verify current capability and terms directly with the vendor rather than trusting any comparison page, this one included.

The trade is that you are renting attention on property you do not own, next to every other store in your market, and the shopper decides who to contact. Most shoppers contact more than one dealer. That is not a knock on the marketplace, it is simply how comparison shopping works, and it is exactly why response speed decides who wins those leads.

What LeadLocate is built to do

LeadLocate is a lead generation platform with a full CRM built around it, sold month to month to dealerships and to individual salespeople.

On the lead side you pick a territory around your store using the Leads Manager zone editor. Every submitted lead inside that zone comes to you exclusively and is not resold to three other dealerships. There are two families. Inbound buyer leads come from in market shoppers, a mix of VIN specific interest and open shoppers who describe what they want in general terms. Opt in seller leads come from local owners who filled out a vehicle offer request and asked a dealership to contact them about selling, which is where acquisition inventory comes from without an auction fee. Nothing is filtered or scored. We ask pre screening questions at capture, deliver everything in the zone, and handle problems through post delivery replacement review rather than a quality claim made up front. Our page on what to expect from car sales leads is blunt about how real shoppers behave.

On the software side you get lead management, SMS and MMS with RCS and SMS fallback, click to call with a VoIP softphone, call recording with transcription, voicemail drop, email with a real inbox and composer, automations and follow up processes, drip campaigns, appointments and reminders, desking covering loan and lease with a fifty state tax matrix, lead pages, personal salesperson websites and a free live chat widget for your site. An inventory feed is not required. If you have one, Inventory Link ingests it and advertises your actual vehicles.

Choose Autotrader if

There are stores that should keep every dollar exactly where it is. If several of these describe you, a marketplace is doing a job we do not do.

  • Discovery is your bottleneck. You have inventory nobody local is searching for and you need shoppers outside your immediate radius to see it.
  • You move specialty, high line or hard to place units that depend on a wide audience rather than a tight territory.
  • Your merchandising is genuinely good and your listings convert, so the placement is paying for itself in a way you can prove.
  • You are already inside the Cox stack and the reporting between products is doing real work for your group.
  • You have plenty of lead volume and your actual problem is follow up discipline, not supply. Changing lead vendors will not fix that.

Choose LeadLocate if

The case for adding or switching is strongest when several of these are true at the same time.

  • You are tired of racing four other stores to the same shopper and you want leads that belong to you alone inside a territory you define.
  • You are paying one vendor for exposure and another for CRM and stitching the two together yourself.
  • You want the acquisition side as well as the buyer side. The seller leads page explains how opt in offer requests from local owners work, and vehicle acquisition software covers the workflow around them.
  • Contract length is a sticking point and you want the freedom to leave the month we stop earning it.
  • You want individual salespeople running on the platform with their own websites and lead pages, not just the store.
  • You do not have, or do not want to depend on, a DMS connection or an inventory feed. Neither is required to operate.

The number most stores never calculate

Before you cancel or add anything, run the same arithmetic on every source you pay for. Most managers can quote the monthly invoice from memory and cannot quote what it produced.

Take one source and one month. Count the leads it actually delivered, count the appointments those leads produced, and count the units sold with that source attributed. Divide the invoice by units sold. That is your real cost per sale from that source, and it is usually the number that ends the argument in a manager meeting.

Here is an illustrative example, and the figures are invented to show the method rather than to describe any vendor. A source costing $2,400 a month that delivers 60 leads is $40 a lead. If 12 of those set an appointment and 4 buy, the source cost $600 a unit. A second source at $1,600 that delivers 25 leads and 3 units costs about $533 a unit even though it looks worse per lead. The cheaper lead was the more expensive car. Neither figure is knowable without attribution, which is the step almost everyone skips.

Getting there requires every lead landing in one system with its source attached and every outcome recorded against it. That is a CRM discipline problem before it is a vendor problem, and marketing attribution software covers how to wire it up so the numbers survive an argument.

Running both is what most stores actually do

The word alternative implies replacement, and replacement is frequently the wrong move. The stores that get this right treat marketplace advertising and direct lead generation as two different jobs with two different failure modes.

Marketplace spend buys discovery. Direct lead generation buys ownership of a contact. A store with weak local awareness and unusual inventory needs the first. A store with steady walk in traffic, a defined trade area and a sales team that needs more at bats needs the second. Plenty of stores need both, and the honest answer is that the mix depends on your market rather than on which vendor argues better.

Month to month pricing exists so you can find out cheaply. Keep your marketplace package running, add a zone around your store for a month or two, and compare on the same period using the same three measures: time to first response, touches per lead before the trail goes cold, and appointments set. If the answer is that we are not adding anything, cancel us. That is the deal, and we would rather you test it than take our word for it.

If you want the head to head laid out in more detail, Autotrader vs LeadLocate goes deeper on the comparison itself.

What to check before you cancel anything

Whichever direction you go, get these answers in writing first. They separate vendors faster than any feature list.

What is the total monthly cost with everything I actually need, and what is the price at renewal? What is the contract length and what does cancellation require? If leads are included, are they exclusive to my store, and how exactly is my territory defined? What happens when a lead is bad? What can I export if I leave, in what format, and does it include communication history? Who owns the customer data? Which integrations cost extra and who maintains them? What does support look like at 6pm on a Saturday, which is when your team is actually working?

Write the answers down. Vendors comfortable being pinned down in writing tend to be the ones still worth having in year three. We cannot guarantee lead counts, close rates or sales results, and neither can anyone else honestly, because those depend on your market, your inventory and your team. What we can do is show you the whole thing running on real lead flow. The demo is the fastest way to see it, and you can always contact us and just ask whether we fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LeadLocate a replacement for a vehicle marketplace?

Not directly. A marketplace sells discovery to shoppers browsing a national site. We supply exclusive leads inside a territory you define plus the CRM to work them. Many stores keep both and compare cost per sold unit after sixty days.

Are LeadLocate leads shared with other dealerships?

No. You choose a zone around your store and every submitted lead inside it is delivered to you exclusively. Nothing is filtered or scored; we ask pre screening questions at capture and deliver everything, with problems handled by post delivery replacement review.

Do I need an inventory feed to use LeadLocate?

No, and that is deliberate. Neither an inventory feed nor DMS access is required, which is why brokers and individual salespeople can run on it. If you do have a feed, Inventory Link ingests it and advertises your real vehicles.

What does LeadLocate cost compared to marketplace advertising?

CRM Only starts at $199 a month and plans that include exclusive leads start at $799. Marketplace pricing is negotiated store by store, so compare against your own invoice rather than a published figure. See the pricing page for our numbers.

Can LeadLocate help me acquire used cars too?

Yes. Marketplace Acquisitions delivers opt in seller leads from local owners who filled out a vehicle offer request and asked to be contacted. It is inbound. We do not go looking for cars advertised elsewhere.

How fast can we be running?

Far quicker than an enterprise implementation, because there is much less to configure and no integration work is required. The realistic constraint is your team's habits rather than setup, which is why we suggest testing with one team before rolling it out.
