CarGurus vs LeadLocate: A Dealer Software Comparison

Compared by the job each one does rather than by feature count, because they are not the same kind of product.

CarGurus is a consumer vehicle marketplace that puts your inventory in front of shoppers browsing many dealerships. LeadLocate generates exclusive leads inside a territory you choose and includes a full CRM to work them. The two solve different halves of the same problem, and most stores are better served deciding which half they are short of.

The short version, before the detail

If you are here to find out which one to buy, the honest answer is that they are not really substitutes, and treating them as such produces a bad decision either way.

CarGurus is reach. It puts your vehicles where consumers are already comparing vehicles across many stores, and it sends you the shoppers who raise their hand on one of yours. What it does not do is work the lead afterward, and it does not help you buy cars.

LeadLocate is exclusivity plus machinery. You draw a territory, leads generated inside it are delivered to your store and not resold to competitors, and a full CRM sits underneath to message, call, follow up, desk and report. What it does not do is put you inside a national consumer marketplace with its own brand and its own traffic.

So the decision is really a diagnosis. A store nobody has heard of, with sharp inventory and a disciplined sales floor, is short of reach. A store with plenty of inbound activity and a follow up process that dies on touch two is short of machinery, and buying more reach makes the second problem more expensive rather than smaller.

Packaging and features change on both sides, so verify anything decision critical with each vendor before you sign. We do not publish competitor pricing because we cannot keep it accurate.

Getting in front of shoppers

On raw consumer reach, a marketplace wins and it is not close. That is the product. Millions of shoppers use marketplaces to compare vehicles, and a dealership website, however good, does not get that traffic on its own.

Marketplace reach also comes with a particular flavor of intent. Somebody who contacts you through a listing has usually looked at photos, compared prices against other listings and decided your vehicle is worth an inquiry. That is meaningful work done before you spoke.

Our reach is different in kind. Campaigns and landing pages generate leads inside a zone you define with the Leads Manager zone editor, so the geography is yours rather than national. Buyer leads arrive as a mix: some are VIN specific, coming from inventory advertising through My Inventory Link, and some are open shoppers describing what they want in general terms. We will not promise a ratio, because it moves with your zone and your stock.

The practical difference is control. On a marketplace you compete for visibility against every other store showing similar vehicles, and the rules of that competition are set by the marketplace. In a zone you own the territory outright and no other dealership is being handed the same lead. Neither is better in the abstract. They are different bets. See dynamic inventory advertising for how the inventory side of ours works.

What arrives, and who else has it

This is the difference dealers feel most in daily operation, so it is worth being precise and careful.

Shoppers on any marketplace are typically comparing several vehicles at several stores, which means the store that responds first has a structural advantage measured in minutes. How contacts are distributed varies by vendor and by plan, so ask CarGurus directly how it works on the package you hold rather than trusting a comparison page.

On our side the commitment is simple. You choose a zone, every submitted lead generated inside it is delivered to your store, and it is not resold to another dealership. That is what exclusive means here and it is the whole point of the model.

Two honest qualifications. Nothing is filtered, scored or quality checked. We ask pre screening questions at capture and then deliver everything that comes in, which means you will see leads that are not ready, leads with a budget that does not match the vehicle, and leads who intend to negotiate hard. That is normal consumer behavior rather than a defect, and our expectations page explains it without softening. Problems are handled by post delivery replacement review rather than by a promise made in advance.

Second, exclusivity is not the same as ready to buy. It removes the race, not the work.

What happens after the lead lands

Here the comparison stops being close in the other direction, because a marketplace hands you a contact and its job is done.

Everything after delivery is included on our side, and this is the part marketplace buyers usually do not realize exists. SMS and MMS with real threading, RCS with SMS fallback so messages look like they came from your store, click to call with a VoIP softphone, call recording with transcription so a manager can read a twelve minute call in half a minute, voicemail drop with recipient lists, email with a real inbox and composer, bulk email and campaign lists.

Then the automation layer: automations, follow up processes, drip campaigns with a drip editor, task automation, appointments, reminders and a calendar. Plus tools most dealers do not expect in a CRM, including an email validator and a phone validator that tell you which of your contact data is worth using.

The desking side runs loan and lease with a fifty state tax matrix, semimonthly payment frequency, trade credit caps and three lease tax methods, with deal jackets, print templates and customer facing deal pages carrying e signature. See the desking tool and the wider automotive CRM pages for detail.

If you already run a CRM your people genuinely use, this counts for less. If your CRM is a spreadsheet and a group text, it counts for a great deal.

Buying cars, not just selling them

Acquisition is the axis most software comparisons skip, and in a market where used inventory is the constraint it deserves its own section.

Our Marketplace Acquisitions plan delivers opt in seller leads: local owners who completed a vehicle offer request on one of our landing pages and asked to be contacted by a dealership about selling. They are inbound. Nobody was contacted because a vehicle appeared somewhere, and nothing is harvested from anywhere. The owner raised their hand. Full detail on the car seller leads page.

For a used car department that is a different supply line from auction, with different economics and no transport bill. It also pairs with the buyer side, since the Buyers and Sellers Hybrid Plan runs both in the same zone and the same CRM.

If acquisition is not your constraint, this axis does not matter to your decision and you should weight it at zero. If it is, it is often the single reason a store adds us alongside whatever marketplace spend they already run.

What CarGurus offers on the acquisition side is theirs to describe, and it changes. Ask them directly rather than taking our word for it.

How the money works differently

The cost models are not comparable line for line, which is why cost per sale is the only figure worth arguing about.

Marketplace spend generally buys presence and visibility, and the number of contacts you receive moves with your inventory, your pricing and how many competitors are bidding for attention in your market that month. Two stores paying the same can get very different results, and a store that sharpens its pricing can change its own outcome without changing its spend.

Our plans are flat monthly subscriptions by zone and plan type. Inbound buyer leads from $799, Marketplace Acquisitions from $999, the Buyers and Sellers Hybrid Plan from $1,599, CRM Only from $199 if you have your own lead sources, Lead Data Only from $599, and Skip A Month at $199 for seasonal stores that want to pause without losing their data. Month to month, US only, on the pricing page.

The comparison that matters is total cost per unit sold, including the CRM you are already paying for separately if you run one. A store spending less on a marketplace but paying a separate CRM bill, a separate texting tool and a separate call tracking product is often not spending less at all. Add the invoices up before you compare anything.

We cannot guarantee lead counts, close rates or sales results, and neither can any marketplace. Treat any number quoted to you as an illustration rather than a commitment.

Choose CarGurus if, choose LeadLocate if

Weight CarGurus more heavily if reach is genuinely your constraint and shoppers in your market simply do not know your store exists. If your inventory is priced to compete and turns quickly. If your team answers new contacts within minutes during business hours, which is the condition under which shared shopper contacts perform. If you already run a CRM your people use and do not need one bundled. If being visible where your local market compares vehicles matters strategically, independent of the leads.

Weight LeadLocate more heavily if you are tired of racing other stores to the same shopper. If your follow up is the weak link and you would rather buy the machinery with the leads than stitch three vendors together. If you want opt in seller leads because used inventory is your bottleneck. If contract length matters and you want the option to leave every month. If you are independent, buy here pay here, a broker or an individual salesperson and franchise oriented tooling is surface area you never use. If you do not have, or do not want to depend on, a DMS integration or an inventory feed, since neither is required.

Run both if the marketplace is producing and the follow up is not, which describes a large number of stores. Point marketplace contacts into our CRM with their own source feed, keep the two lead streams separate in reporting, and judge each on cost per unit sold over ninety days. The alternative page covers that side by side approach, and Autotrader vs LeadLocate asks the same questions of a different marketplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LeadLocate a replacement for CarGurus?

Not directly. A marketplace supplies national consumer reach we do not claim to match. We supply exclusive leads inside a zone you define plus the CRM to work them. Many stores run both and judge each on cost per unit sold.

What does exclusive actually mean here?

You choose a territory, and every submitted lead generated inside it is delivered to your store and not resold to another dealership. It removes the race to respond. It does not mean the lead is ready to buy, and nothing is filtered or scored.

Do we still need a separate CRM?

No. Messaging, calling with recording and transcription, automation, drip campaigns, appointments, desking with a fifty state tax matrix, deal jackets and reporting are all included. If you already have a CRM your team uses, that reduces the value of this side for you.

Which one is better for buying used cars?

That is where our acquisition plans are aimed. Opt in seller leads come from local owners who submitted a vehicle offer request and asked to be contacted. Ask CarGurus directly what their current acquisition offering does, since it changes.

Can we try it without cancelling our marketplace spend?

Yes, and we would prefer you did. Run both for sixty to ninety days with separate source feeds so the lead streams stay distinct, then compare cost per delivered lead, response time, appointments shown and units sold.

How current is this comparison?

The LeadLocate side is accurate as we publish. The CarGurus side is deliberately general, because packaging and pricing change often and we will not invent specifics. Verify anything decision critical with the vendor directly.
