What Is Special Finance?

Subprime is what the loan is. Special finance is how a store handles it: the interview, the lender order, the structure and the stip list.

Special finance is the department and the process a dealership uses to place buyers with damaged, thin or complicated credit with the lenders that buy those deals. The desk interviews the customer, takes a complete application, structures the deal to a specific lender program, and works the approval and its stipulations through to funding.

What is special finance at a dealership?

Special finance is the department, and the process, a dealership uses to place customers with damaged, thin or complicated credit with the lenders that buy those deals. It is a job title, a desk, a set of lender relationships and a way of working a deal, and at a well run store it is the part of the business that turns applications other stores decline into delivered cars.

The vocabulary around it is loose. A store may call the same desk special finance, credit challenged, second chance financing or simply the SF desk. What it always means in practice is somebody whose whole day is spent matching an applicant to a lender program: knowing which of the store's lenders wants a first time buyer, which one is comfortable with a discharged bankruptcy, which one will advance more on a late model unit, which one wants proof of income before it will look, and in what order to send them.

That is the useful distinction to hold on to. Subprime describes the loan. Special finance describes how a dealership handles it. Related terms are collected in the automotive sales glossary.

How a special finance desk works a deal

It starts with an interview rather than a car. A good special finance manager learns the income and how it is documented, time at the job and the address, what the customer can put into the deal, who else can be on the loan, what happened on the credit file and when, and what the customer is currently paying for transportation. Only then does anyone talk about a vehicle, because the vehicle has to fit the program that will approve the deal.

Then the full credit application goes in, complete, with references and income documentation attached rather than promised. The desk structures the deal to a specific lender's rules, sends it in the right order, and works the approval that comes back: the advance cap, the term, the payment to income limit and the stipulation list. Illustrative figures only, a lender might approve $17,500 total advance at 66 months with a payment near $370 a month against $3,600 of verified monthly income, and want two pay stubs, a utility bill and five references before it funds. The store then finds the unit that fits inside those numbers, delivers, and clears the stips the same day.

The desking half of that loop, building and comparing structures until the payment and the advance both work, is covered on the desking tool page.

What separates a special finance department that produces

Four things separate a special finance department that produces from one that just exists. The first is lender spread: a store with three lenders declines deals that a store with nine delivers, and that is a management decision, not a market condition. The second is speed, because credit challenged shoppers apply everywhere at once and the store that comes back first with a real structure usually gets the customer.

The third is document discipline. These deals live and die on verification, so a desk that collects income and residence proof during the interview rather than after the delivery funds contracts a week earlier than one that does not. The fourth is compliance built into the routine and treated as a strength: an adverse action notice with real reasons when an application is declined, as Regulation B requires, OFAC screening, a Red Flags program for identity discrepancies, and the Safeguards Rule protections around the customer data the store just collected. Payment packing and creative income belong nowhere near this desk, because both produce an unwind and a customer who tells everyone.

Where the traffic comes from is the other half of the equation, which is the subject of special finance auto leads.

How LeadLocate handles special finance

The platform runs the special finance desk end to end up to the lender decision. Credit challenged shoppers arrive as leads that belong to one store in one zone, prescreened at capture and backed by a replacement review, so the desk is working its own customers rather than a list four other stores already called. A branded apply link turns the interview into a complete application on the customer's phone, with income, deposit, trade, co-applicant and document uploads, and the application lands in a pipeline with a status, an owner and a note history. From there the desk builds structures, attaches a worksheet, tracks the stipulation list and shares the finished application with the lender it chooses through a code gated, expiring, watermarked link. The role view of all of it is on the page for special finance managers.

What special finance is often confused with

The biggest confusion is with the phrase special financing in retail advertising, which usually means a promotional rate offered through a manufacturer's finance arm to the best credit tiers. That promotion is the opposite end of the credit spectrum from a special finance department, and the two share nothing but a word.

Special finance is also not buy here pay here. A special finance desk places the contract with an outside lender that funds the deal; a buy here pay here store keeps the note. And it is not a promise of approval: the desk's job is to find the lender whose program fits the applicant, and some applications still come back declined, which is exactly when the adverse action notice matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is special financing the same as subprime?

They describe different things. Subprime is the credit profile and the loan priced against it. Special finance is the dealership function that places those loans with lenders. Most special finance deals are subprime, but the words are not interchangeable.

What does a special finance manager do?

Interviews the customer, takes a complete application, knows every lender program the store has access to, structures the deal to the one that fits, sends the applications in the right order and clears the stipulations so the contract funds.

What should a customer bring to a special finance appointment?

Identification, recent pay stubs or proof of income, a utility bill or lease showing the address, proof of insurance, references with working phone numbers, and whatever they intend to put toward the deal.

Does a special finance deal always mean a high payment?

Not always, but the rate is priced to the risk, so the vehicle usually has to be selected to fit the lender advance and the payment to income limit. Choosing the right unit is what keeps the payment reasonable.
