What Is RCS Messaging?

The standard that follows SMS on modern phones, what a customer sees when a store sends one, and why the fallback matters more than the features.

RCS, short for Rich Communication Services, is the messaging standard that succeeds SMS on modern phones. It carries long text, sharp images, buttons, read receipts and typing indicators inside the phone's own messaging app, with nothing for the consumer to install. For a dealership it means a vehicle photo that looks like a photo instead of a blurry attachment.

What does RCS messaging mean?

It means the phone's regular text thread grew up. SMS was designed for 160 characters of plain text and nothing else; anything richer had to be bolted on as MMS, which compressed pictures until they looked like a photocopy. RCS replaces that plumbing. A message can run long without being chopped into segments, an image arrives at something close to its real resolution, the sender can be a verified business with a name and a logo instead of a bare number, and the conversation supports the behaviours people expect from a chat app: typing indicators, read receipts, higher quality group threads.

The important part for a business is where it lives. RCS is not an app. It runs inside the messaging app already on the phone, in the same thread as the customer's plain texts, which is why a store does not have to persuade anyone to install anything. Both major phone platforms now support it in their built in messaging app, and support is decided by the handset and the carrier together. Related messaging terms are defined in the automotive sales glossary.

What does a customer actually see?

A customer with a phone and carrier that support RCS sees a message thread that looks like the ones they have with their friends. A sedan a salesperson sent shows up as a clean image they can open, not as a grainy attachment. A long message about what is included in a certified warranty arrives as one message rather than three fragments arriving out of order. If the store sends through a verified business sender, the thread carries the store's name at the top rather than a ten digit number the customer does not recognize.

A customer whose phone or carrier does not support RCS sees a normal text. That is the part that matters more than any feature in the list, because a dealership's customer base is not a demonstration. Some share of any list is on a handset that handles plain SMS and nothing else, and a system that only speaks RCS either loses those messages or makes the rep keep two lists and guess which one a customer belongs on. Automatic fallback makes the question disappear.

How does a dealership use RCS?

The same way it uses texting, with better material. Say a salesperson is working twelve internet leads on a Tuesday and eight of those customers are on phones that handle RCS, illustrative figures only. She sends each of them the unit they asked about with three photos and the price. On the eight RCS phones the photos render crisply in the thread and she can see when the message was read. On the other four the same message goes as a standard text with the pictures attached. She sent one message from one screen; she did not choose a format, and no customer noticed there was a choice.

The practical gain is not novelty, it is a shopper looking at the actual car instead of a description of it. A used vehicle sells on its photos, and a message that renders them properly is closer to a walkaround than a paragraph will ever be. The second gain is confidence: read receipts tell a rep whether a follow up landed, which is better information than silence.

How does LeadLocate handle RCS?

LeadLocate CRM sends RCS with automatic SMS fallback, per message and per handset, from the same two way texting inbox a rep uses all day. There is no RCS menu and no second list. The rep types, attaches a vehicle with the vehicle button, and the platform decides the format the customer's phone can receive. The bubble carries a delivery status either way, and the message sits in the lead's communications log next to the calls, emails and voicemails, so a manager reading a thread top to bottom does not need a legend to follow it. The detail is on RCS messaging with SMS fallback, and sending one is walked through in how to send an RCS message.

Consent works the same for a rich message as for a plain one. A stop keyword opts the customer out whatever format their reply arrived in, a help keyword gets a reply that identifies the store, and the Do Not Call Blacklist hides an opted out contact from every list the store can build. A better looking message is not a new permission, and treating it that way is how a store keeps its texting welcome.

RCS, SMS and MMS: what is the difference?

SMS is plain text, 160 characters to a segment, delivered by the carrier to any phone that has ever existed. MMS is the older way to attach a picture, a short video or a longer body to a text, and it compresses media hard. RCS is the modern standard that does all of it properly inside the phone's own messaging app, where support exists. A chat app is a fourth thing entirely: it needs both parties to install it, which makes it a poor fit for reaching a customer who filled out a lead form twenty minutes ago.

For a store the ranking is simple. Send from one inbox, let the platform pick RCS when the phone can take it and SMS or MMS when it cannot, and judge the channel by replies rather than by format. A customer answering a question about a vehicle is the outcome; how their handset rendered the photo is a detail the software should own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is RCS the same as SMS?

No. SMS is the original plain text standard, limited to short segments and no real media. RCS is the newer standard that carries long text, high quality images, buttons, read receipts and typing indicators in the same messaging app, where the handset and carrier support it.

Does a customer need an app to receive RCS?

No. RCS runs inside the messaging app already on the phone, in the same thread as their other texts. Both major phone platforms support it in their built in messaging app, so there is nothing for a dealership to ask a customer to install.

What happens if a customer's phone does not support RCS?

The message is delivered as a standard text instead. In LeadLocate that fallback is automatic and happens per message and per handset, so a rep sends once and every customer gets a format their phone understands.

Does RCS change the rules about texting customers?

No. A richer message is still a message to a consumer, so the same consent, the same stop keyword handling and the same internal do not call list apply exactly as they do to plain texts.
