Two Way Texting Inbox With Pictures and Delivery Status
Texting is where car deals happen now. The inbox is the screen a salesperson lives in, so it has to be faster than their personal phone and keep a better record.
What the texting inbox does, in one sentence
The two way texting inbox is the screen inside LeadLocate CRM where every text a customer sends to the store's numbers, and every text the store sends back, lives as one conversation per customer, with pictures, files, delivery status and the lead record attached. It is the same inbox on the desktop under the Messaging menu and on the phone in the LeadLocate mobile app, so a conversation started at a desk continues from the lot without either side noticing a seam.
Two things separate it from a texting tool bolted onto a CRM. The messages and the customer record are the same system, so a text is never orphaned from the lead it belongs to. And it was built for the way salespeople actually text: fast, with photos, from whatever device is closest. The automotive CRM with texting and calling page makes the case for built in messaging in general. This page is the inbox itself, control by control.
A normal afternoon in the inbox
A customer who submitted a lead this morning texts the store's number at 2:10: is the blue one still there. The Text Message Sound chimes, a toast shows the first line, and the conversation moves to the top of the list on the left of the inbox. The rep clicks it and the whole thread opens on the right: her earlier outbound text with its Delivered label, the customer's reply, and the lead's name and status above it. She clicks the vehicle button, picks the blue one from the store's inventory, and it drops into the message as an MMS with the photos and price. She types one line above it, hits Send, and watches the bubble go from Sending to Delivered.
At 2:40 the customer sends a photo of their trade. It renders inline in the thread, no download, and she opens View Lead Details from the same screen to note the mileage. At 4:15 she is on the lot, so the customer's next reply comes to her phone as a Text Reply Alert, and she answers it from the mobile inbox. The thread on the desktop shows the answer too, marked Sent by with her name, because the manager reading it later should know who said what. Nothing was copied between systems. Nothing was typed twice.

Pictures, files and a vehicle in the message
MMS is not an afterthought here. The Attach file (MMS) control takes photos, PDFs and other files, up to 20 in a batch with a 50 MB ceiling per file, and the customer sees them as pictures and attachments in their messaging app rather than as a link to a portal. Inbound pictures, the trade photos, the insurance card, the screenshot of a competitor's quote, render right in the thread. Files can be pulled from the CRM's file library or uploaded from a computer or a mobile device, and a file the store sends often can be saved to a folder for next time.
The Insert a vehicle from your inventory button is the one reps notice first. It opens the store's inventory, and the chosen unit lands in the message with its photos and price as an MMS. A customer asking about three cars gets three real cars, not a promise to send something later. When the store's inventory is fed by Inventory Link, the price and photos in that message are the ones on the lot today. For a picture that did not go through, an outbound bubble offers to resend the attachment to the customer as a tap-to-open link, which handles the customer whose carrier is strict about media without starting the conversation over.
A delivery status on every bubble
Every outbound message carries its own status under the bubble, updated live: Sending, then Delivered, or Not delivered, or Failed. The difference matters more than it sounds. A rep who sees Failed on a text at 9:05 calls at 9:06 instead of waiting two days for a reply that was never going to come. A manager reviewing a lead that went quiet sees whether the store's messages reached the customer at all, which changes the conversation from why did you not follow up to why did that number not accept texts. And a lead reported through replacement review carries those statuses as evidence.
The same thread also shows who sent each message. Sent by: You on the rep's own bubbles, and the teammate's name on the ones a colleague or a manager sent from the same conversation. Because every text and MMS is also written to the lead's communications log alongside calls, emails and voicemails, the inbox and the lead agree with each other by construction. There is no export, no sync, and no conversation living only on a personal phone.
The controls around the thread
Above the message box sits the toolbox a busy rep actually uses. Select a Template drops in one of the store's saved texts. The AI Writing Assistant drafts a message from a short instruction, and Clean Up My Text tidies a message typed in a hurry; the AI writing assistant page covers both. Voice input dictates a message on a desk without a keyboard in reach. Schedule TEXT Follow-up queues a text for a chosen date and time, and Schedule Voicemail does the same with a recorded voicemail drop, both from inside the conversation. A link pasted into a message can be shortened into a trackable short link with click stats.
Around the thread, Assign To hands a conversation to another user, so a Saturday inbound reaches the person working Saturday. Blacklist adds a number to the DNC Blacklist from the conversation itself. Row colors and Filter by Color let a rep mark and find threads the way they already mark leads. The conversation list searches by name, phone, email or company across the whole database, and New Text Message starts a thread with a contact who has not texted yet. The top bar's Send a Text button opens the same composer from any page in the CRM.
What it replaces, and what a personal phone costs
The inbox replaces the salesperson's personal phone, which is the most common dealership texting tool in America and the worst one. When that rep leaves, the threads leave. When a compliance question arrives, there is no record. When a manager asks what was said to the customer, the answer is a screenshot, or nothing. Stores that know this buy a separate texting platform and connect it to the CRM, which gives them a second login, a second bill, a second number pool and two vendors pointing at each other when a picture does not send.
Here the inbox is part of the CRM on every plan, including CRM Only from $199 a month on the pricing page, on the store's own tracking numbers, with the phone app included. The rep gets a tool faster than their phone, which is the only reason they will use it, and the store gets the record.
The compliance angle: consent, opt outs and the record
Texting a consumer is regulated, and the inbox is built so the safe path is the default path. A customer who replies with a stop keyword is opted out automatically and added to the two way blacklist, so no rep and no automation texts that number again by accident. Help keywords get a reply that identifies the store and how to reach it. The DNC Blacklist page runs a live do not call lookup on numbers and blocks inbound spam in both directions, and Blacklist is one click from any thread. The TCPA compliance for dealership texting page explains the rules a store still has to follow itself; the inbox makes following them the easy option.
Then the record. Every message, picture, status and sender name is stored with the lead, and the customer's contact information lives in the encrypted Customer Profile rather than in a rep's contacts app. A question from a customer, a regulator or a lawyer about what the store said and when has a written answer with a timestamp, from the store's own system, not from a personal handset that may have been replaced.
How to turn it on, and what to pair it with
There is nothing to install. Tracking phone numbers are provisioned to the account, the inbox is under the Messaging menu on the desktop and under Text in the dock of the mobile app, and the first conversation starts when a customer texts one of those numbers or a rep clicks Send a Text. If the store already has numbers it wants to keep, our team sets that up on request. If we are ever briefly unreachable, the texts already delivered are on the customer's phone and the numbers are yours; a rep with the mobile app keeps the conversation history from the last sync, and new inbound texts land in the thread when the inbox is back.
Pair the inbox with RCS messaging with SMS fallback, which sends the richer format to phones that support it and plain SMS to the rest through the same thread, and with the Phone Validator, whose validity dots on the lead tell a rep before typing whether the number can receive texts at all. Text Automation and Automated Templates start conversations so the inbox is answering interested customers rather than chasing cold ones, and Bulk Texting handles the store wide message. The full set is on the all features page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can customers text pictures to the store, and can we send them?
Yes, both directions. Inbound photos render inline in the thread. Outbound, the Attach file (MMS) control sends photos, PDFs and other files, up to 20 in a batch and 50 MB per file, and the vehicle button drops a unit from inventory into the message with its photos and price.
How do I know if a text was delivered?
Every outbound bubble shows its own live status: Sending, Delivered, Not delivered or Failed. A failed attachment can be resent to the customer as a tap-to-open link from the same bubble.
Does the inbox work on my phone?
Yes. The LeadLocate mobile app has the same SMS inbox and composer under Text in its dock, and a Text Reply Alert on your phone opens the conversation directly. A thread started on the desktop continues on the phone and back.
What happens when a customer texts STOP?
They are opted out automatically and added to the two way blacklist, so no user and no automation texts that number again. Help keywords get a reply identifying the store. Blacklist is also one click from any thread.
Can a manager see who sent each message?
Yes. Each bubble is marked Sent by with the user's name, or Sent by: You on your own, and every message is written to the lead's communications log next to calls, emails and voicemails.
Is texting an extra charge?
The inbox, MMS, delivery status and the mobile app are part of every plan, including CRM Only from $199 a month. Plans are on the pricing page.
Give your team an inbox faster than their own phones
One thread per customer, pictures both ways, a status on every message and the lead one click away, on desktop and in the app. See it in the pre-recorded demo or start month to month.
