What Is a Be Back?
The customer who says they will return, why most of them mean it when they say it, and what turns the sentence into a sale.
A be back is a customer who leaves a dealership without buying and says they will come back. On the floor the phrase covers both the promise and the person: a salesperson calling someone a be back means the deal is alive but unfinished, and a be back who actually returns is often the easiest sale of the week, because the shopping is already over.
What does be back mean at a car dealership?
It comes straight from the sentence customers say on the way out: I will be back. A salesperson who reports three ups and two be backs means two people left with the deal unfinished and a stated intention to return. Used the other way, a be back is the customer standing in the showroom for the second time, and every veteran on the floor will tell you those close at a far better rate than a first visit, because the shopper has already done the looking.
The old joke about the be back bus, the one that never arrives, exists because the term is used to excuse an unclosed deal. That is the part worth arguing with. The sentence is real information: the customer liked something enough to soften the exit. Whether they return is decided in the following week, not in the parking lot, and it is decided by the store rather than by the customer.
Why does a customer say they will be back?
Usually because something real is unfinished. The payment is higher than the number in their head. The spouse who has to approve it is at work. They want to know what their trade is worth somewhere else. They are waiting on a pre approval from their own bank or credit union. They have an appointment at another store that afternoon and are too polite to say so. Or they simply do not buy a large item the first time they see it, which describes a very large share of adults.
None of those are objections to argue away at the curb, and none of them mean the customer was lying. They are open questions, and each one has an answer the store can send in writing later that day: a structure at a payment that works, a real trade number, the vehicle from the angle they liked, a note the spouse can read. Explaining behaviour instead of complaining about it is most of what separates a closer from a complainer.

What separates a real be back from a polite exit?
Three things, and they all happen before the customer leaves. First, information: a working mobile number, permission to text, and a note in the record saying what the sticking point actually was. Second, something in their hand or on their phone worth opening again, such as the worksheet with the figures on it and a photo of the unit. Third, a time. Not a day, a time, with a reason attached, such as the used car manager being in at ten on Saturday to look at their trade.
A worked example, illustrative only. Of ten ups on a Saturday, say three leave saying they will be back. The store that wrote no notes and has no number gets whoever happens to return. The store that texted a recap at 4 p.m., sent a trade figure on Monday and confirmed an appointment for the following Saturday morning is holding three appointments, and two of them show. Same three customers, different week.
How does a store turn a be back into an appointment?
Send the recap the same day, while the visit is still vivid. Answer the one open question specifically rather than asking whether they had a chance to think it over. Use the channel the customer actually reads, which is almost always text. Keep going past the first week, because a shopper waiting on a bank answer or a spouse's schedule is often two weeks from buying and nobody is talking to them by then. And log every attempt, so the next person who opens the record knows exactly what was tried.
The one mistake worth naming is the daily check in with no new information. Three messages asking whether they are still interested teaches the customer to ignore the number. A message with a new figure, a new unit or a specific time earns a reply.
How does LeadLocate handle a be back?
The visit becomes a record instead of a memory. The lead carries a custom status and tags, so be back is a real state a manager can filter, and the lost reason is captured if the customer says no outright. The recap goes out from the record itself: the worked structure becomes a customer deal page or a pencil recap sheet the shopper can open on a phone, with the figures laid out the way the desk built them. A follow up process picks the lead up automatically and runs a multi step plan for as long as the store wants it worked, mixing texts, calls and emails. The appointment is set on a shared calendar or booked by the customer from a link, and when they walk back in, In-Store Now tells the desk who is in the building and who is with them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a be back at a dealership?
A customer who leaves without buying and says they will return. The term is used both for the promise and for the shopper who actually comes back, who tends to be an easy close.
What is the be back bus?
Floor slang for the imaginary bus that never shows up, used to mock the idea that a customer will return on their own. The point behind the joke is that returns are produced by follow up.
How long should a store work a be back?
Longer than a week. Shoppers waiting on a bank answer, a spouse or a trade payoff often buy two or three weeks later, by which time most salespeople have stopped calling.
Should a be back get different follow up than an internet lead?
Yes. A be back has already seen the vehicle and told you the sticking point, so the follow up answers that one thing specifically instead of introducing the store all over again.
See the follow up that brings them back
A specialist builds a be back process on a live account: the recap the same day, the trade number Monday, the appointment Saturday.
