Performance Max Campaigns for Car Dealerships

A goal-based campaign type that spends across every Google surface at once. Useful, opaque, and easy to feed the wrong signal.

Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that spends across Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail and Maps from one budget, steered by the conversion signals you send it. For a dealership the risk is not the ad surfaces, it is the signal. Feed it form fills of any quality and it will find you more of exactly that.

What Performance Max is, in dealership terms

Performance Max is a campaign type inside Google Ads that runs across essentially every surface Google owns from a single budget: search results, display placements, YouTube, Discover, Gmail and Maps. You supply assets, headlines, descriptions, images and video, along with audience hints and a conversion goal. The system decides the rest: which surface, which placement, which combination, which auction.

For a dealership that is genuinely appealing. The alternative is running five campaign types with five sets of settings and five people's opinions about budget splits. Performance Max collapses that into one budget with one objective.

The trade is control and visibility. You do not choose placements the way you would in a display campaign. Reporting on which search terms and which placements produced what has historically been thinner than advertisers want, though Google has expanded it over time. Verify what the current reporting surface actually gives you, because this product changes frequently and any article older than a few months describes a different tool.

The practical consequence for a store is that you cannot manage this campaign by adjusting knobs. You manage it by controlling two things: the conversion signal you send back and the assets you feed in. Everything else is delegated.

The signal problem, which is where dealership campaigns actually fail

Performance Max optimizes toward whatever you tell it counts as success. That single sentence explains most disappointing dealership results.

If your conversion event is any form submission, the system will get very good at producing form submissions. Some will be real shoppers. Some will be people who wanted a payment number and nothing else. Some will be junk with a made up phone number. The algorithm cannot tell the difference unless you tell it, and it will happily chase the cheapest version of the thing you asked for.

The fix is to define success further down the funnel. A conversion that fires on a contacted lead is better than one that fires on a submitted form. One that fires on a set appointment is better still. One that fires on a shown appointment is best, though the delay involved makes it harder for the system to learn from.

Most stores cannot do this because the downstream events live in the CRM and nobody has connected the two ends. That is the work worth doing, and it is a CRM discipline problem more than an advertising one. You need every lead tagged with its source at capture, an accurate record of what happened next, and reporting that ties the two together. Our page on marketing attribution covers the plumbing, and CRM lead attribution covers keeping the source intact once the lead is in the system.

One caution before you tighten the signal. Optimizing toward a rare event with very low volume gives the system too little to learn from, and performance can get worse rather than better. Move one step down the funnel at a time and give each change several weeks.

Assets: the half you still fully control

Since placement is delegated, asset quality is where a store's own effort shows up. Thin assets produce thin results, and dealership asset sets are usually thin because they were assembled once at launch and never revisited.

Video matters more here than dealers expect, because YouTube is a major surface in this campaign type and a missing video asset does not mean the surface is skipped, it means the system generates something from what you gave it. Walkaround footage of real inventory outperforms stock footage of a generic sedan, and it costs a salesperson twenty minutes with a phone. Our page on walkaround video marketing covers producing that at a realistic pace.

Images should look like your store and your actual cars, not a stock library. Headlines should say something specific enough to disqualify the wrong click. A headline that says quality pre owned vehicles attracts everyone, which means it attracts nobody in particular and you pay for the difference.

Give the system enough variety to test with, then let it work. Rewriting every asset weekly resets learning and produces a campaign that never stabilizes. Refresh on a monthly or seasonal cadence instead, and change assets on evidence rather than on boredom.

Where Performance Max fits against the rest of your spend

Campaign approachBest atWeak at
Performance MaxCovering every Google surface from one budget with automated biddingPlacement control and clean channel level reporting
Standard SearchIntent capture on exact model and finance terms you chooseReach beyond search
Vehicle listing formatsShowing actual VINs to in market shoppersRequires a clean, current inventory feed
Social and videoReaching people who are not searching yetAttribution and immediate intent
Exclusive local leadsPeople who asked to be contacted, delivered to one storeNot a substitute for brand presence

The mistake is treating Performance Max as a replacement for the rest of the account. It is one instrument. A store that moves its entire budget into it typically loses the ability to explain what happened, which is a problem the first month results dip. Keep a search campaign on your highest intent terms so you retain a controlled comparison.

Also worth knowing: vehicle specific ad formats are a separate product from Performance Max and depend on a clean, current inventory feed. If your feed is stale, that channel misfires regardless of budget. See Google vehicle ads for dealerships and inventory feed management.

What happens after the click decides the result

Here is the part that agencies rarely emphasize, because it is not their half of the job. Performance Max delivers a click and, if things go well, a lead. Everything that determines whether that lead becomes a sale happens inside your store, and it happens fast.

Speed to first response is the whole ballgame. A paid lead that sits for four hours is a paid lead you gave to whoever answered first. Automated first response, follow up processes and drip sequences make sure something goes out within a minute at any hour, including the 9:40 pm form fill that generates a surprising share of dealership leads.

Broad campaign types produce a wider quality spread than a narrow search campaign does, which means contact hygiene matters more here. A built in email validator and phone validator catch a bad contact before your team spends an hour on it, and they also protect the sending reputation you rely on for every other campaign.

Calls need the same treatment. A campaign driving phone calls into an unstaffed line at lunchtime is a budget bonfire. IVR with routing gets the caller to the right person, missed call text back converts an abandoned ring into a thread, and call recording with transcription lets a manager review what actually got said without listening to every call.

Then the landing side. Lead pages with per page URL settings let you run a distinct page per campaign or per model, so the offer in the ad and the page a shopper lands on say the same thing. That alignment moves conversion rate more than most bid adjustments do.

A measurement setup that survives contact with a manager meeting

Whatever the platform reports, you need a version of the numbers you can defend in your own building. Four layers, in order.

  1. Spend and cost per lead by campaign, straight from the ads platform. Necessary, not sufficient, and never the number to argue from.
  2. Lead outcomes from the CRM. Contacted, appointment set, appointment shown, sold, by source. This is where a campaign that looked cheap gets exposed as a campaign that produced nothing.
  3. Call outcomes. Volume, answer rate, and what the conversations actually were. Transcription turns this from an argument into evidence.
  4. A stated attribution rule. First touch, last touch or a split, chosen once and applied consistently. Any rule applied consistently beats the best rule applied differently by each vendor reporting to you.

Report on a fixed cadence with the same definitions every month. The most common cause of a bad advertising decision at a dealership is not a bad campaign, it is two people comparing numbers that were never measuring the same thing.

Any arithmetic you build from a page like this is illustrative. We cannot guarantee lead volume, cost per acquisition or sales results, and any vendor promising you those numbers before seeing your market is guessing.

How the platform fits alongside your Google spend

Being clear about our own boundary. Performance Max runs inside your Google Ads account, managed by you or by whoever handles your paid media. We are not an OEM certified vendor and we do not certify anyone's account.

What we do supply is the layer around it. The paid ads module with targeting and campaign management, and the Leads Manager self service campaign builder with a zone editor, which is how a store defines the territory its exclusive local leads come from. Lead pages give you a landing page builder with per page URL settings for campaign specific pages. The free live chat widget catches visitors who will not fill in a form. Salesperson websites give individual staff their own capture point.

On the lead supply side, exclusive local leads are a different instrument than paid search entirely. You pick a territory, and every submitted lead inside that zone comes to you and is not resold to three other dealerships. Nothing is filtered or scored. We ask pre screening questions at capture and deliver what comes in, with problems handled by post delivery replacement review rather than a quality promise made up front. There are two families: inbound buyer leads, and opt in seller leads from local owners who filled out a vehicle offer request and asked to be contacted about selling.

Plans run month to month with no long term contract, from $199 for CRM Only up through the lead programs. The pricing page has the detail, and what to expect from car sales leads is deliberately blunt about how that flow behaves in practice.

A sane sequence for a store starting or fixing Performance Max

Do these in order. Skipping to step four is why so many accounts underperform.

One, fix the signal. Get lead source captured accurately at the point of capture and preserved through the CRM. Until that is true, every optimization decision after it is built on sand.

Two, define the conversion you actually want. Move it as far down the funnel as your volume can support, and be honest about whether you have enough events for the system to learn from.

Three, fix response. Automated first response inside a minute, a written cadence, IVR and missed call text back on the phone side. There is no point buying more leads into a process that drops them.

Four, build the assets. Real video, real photos of your real cars, headlines specific enough to filter the wrong click.

Five, launch and leave it alone. Give it several weeks before drawing conclusions, and change one variable at a time. Then review monthly against the four measurement layers above, using the same definitions every month.

If you want to see the response and measurement half running before you spend another dollar on media, the demo shows it on live flow, or call 844-376-2274.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Performance Max a good fit for a car dealership?

It can be, if your conversion signal is accurate. It spends across every Google surface from one budget and optimizes toward whatever you tell it counts. Stores that count raw form fills usually get more raw form fills. Stores that count contacted leads or set appointments get better outcomes.

Should Performance Max replace our search campaigns?

We would not. Keep a standard search campaign on your highest intent model and finance terms so you retain a controlled comparison and some placement visibility. Moving an entire budget into one automated campaign type usually costs you the ability to explain a bad month.

Does LeadLocate manage Google Ads accounts?

Performance Max runs inside your own Google Ads account, managed by you or your media partner. What the platform supplies is the paid ads module, targeting, campaign tools, Leads Manager with its zone editor, lead pages, live chat and the CRM that handles everything after the click.

How do we tell whether Performance Max leads are any good?

Measure past the platform. Track contacted, appointment set, appointment shown and sold by source inside the CRM, and review call outcomes with transcription. Cost per lead is the least informative number available and it is the one most stores argue about.

Why do we get junk phone numbers from broad campaigns?

Broad automated campaign types produce a wider quality spread than narrow search. Built in email and phone validation catches bad contacts before your team spends time on them, and it protects the sending reputation your other campaigns depend on.

What results should we expect?

We cannot guarantee lead volume, cost per acquisition or sales, and neither can any honest vendor, because results depend on your market, inventory, pricing and how fast your team responds. Set a measurement baseline first, then judge the change against it.
