Dealer Inspire vs LeadLocate

Where the two products genuinely overlap, where they do not, and what a store gains or gives up by picking one over the other.

Dealer Inspire, part of the Cars.com group, is primarily a dealership website and digital retailing platform with a messaging layer. LeadLocate supplies exclusive local leads and a full CRM on month to month terms. The overlap is chat and lead capture. The rest of each product does a different job entirely.

Different jobs, one shared border

Comparing these two head to head only makes sense along one shared border, and it helps to name that border early. Dealer Inspire lives on the shopper facing side of the store: the website, the vehicle detail page, the payment and digital retailing experience, and the chat window in the corner of the screen. LeadLocate lives on the store facing side: where the lead lands, who owns it, how fast someone answers, what gets said, and what the deal looks like when it gets structured.

The border between them is messaging and lead capture. Both products put a conversation in front of a shopper and both create records out of it. That is the part worth arguing over.

Everything else is not really a comparison. We do not sell full dealership websites and we are not an OEM approved website vendor, so if a website replacement is what you are shopping for, we are not the answer and we would rather say it here than three demos from now. Likewise, a website platform is not going to run your follow up cadence, your call recording or your desking.

What Dealer Inspire is built for

Dealer Inspire is a dealership website provider within the Cars.com group. Publicly it is known for dealership website design and hosting, a digital retailing product that lets shoppers build a deal on the vehicle detail page, and a messaging product that handles website chat and text with a mix of automation and staffed response.

Its strength is the shopper experience on your own site. If your traffic is healthy and your problem is that visitors leave the vehicle detail page without doing anything, that is exactly the problem this category exists to solve. Franchise stores also weigh manufacturer website vendor programs, which can affect co-op reimbursement, and that consideration sits entirely outside anything we offer.

Packaging and capability change over time, and the Cars.com group has reorganized products more than once. Verify current features, program status, pricing and contract terms directly with the vendor rather than taking any comparison page at face value, including ours. If you want the broader category view, the dealer website platform page lays out what to test.

What LeadLocate is built for

Two halves, and both matter.

The lead half delivers exclusive local leads inside a territory you define around your store. Leads submitted in that zone come to you and are not resold to other dealerships. There are inbound buyer leads from in market shoppers and opt in seller leads from local owners who filled out a vehicle offer request and asked a dealership to contact them. Nothing is filtered or scored. Pre screening questions are asked at capture, every submitted lead in the zone is delivered exclusively, and lead problems go through post delivery replacement review rather than being papered over with a quality claim.

The CRM half is deep enough that most dealers have not seen the whole thing. Lead inbox with distribution rules and lists, SMS and MMS threading, RCS with automatic SMS fallback, click to call with a VoIP softphone, call recording with transcription, voicemail drop with recipient lists, a real email inbox and composer plus bulk email, automations and follow up processes, drip campaigns with an editor, appointments, reminders, and a desking engine covering loan and lease with a fifty state tax matrix, semimonthly payment frequency, trade credit caps and three lease tax methods. There is an email validator and a phone validator built in, and document AI that reads a driver license or scans a VIN from a photo.

Choose Dealer Inspire if

Some stores should stop reading here, and we would rather they did.

  • You need a new dealership website and that is the actual purchase. We do not sell one.
  • You are a franchise point where the manufacturer maintains an approved website vendor list and co-op money is attached to it.
  • Your site converts poorly and the fix is on the vehicle detail page, not in the follow up.
  • You already run other products in the Cars.com group and the connections between them are producing.
  • You want a staffed chat product where somebody else answers the window for you overnight.

Those are legitimate reasons and none of them are solved by a better CRM.

Choose LeadLocate if

The argument tips our way when the leak is downstream of the website.

  • You get enough opportunities and lose them to slow response and thin follow up.
  • You want the vendor to supply leads, not just capture the ones your own media paid for.
  • Exclusive matters to you. Shared internet leads that three stores dial inside the same minute are a different business than a lead nobody else received.
  • You want vehicle acquisition volume too, and opt in seller leads from local owners are as valuable to your used car department as a shopper is to the sales floor.
  • You are independent or buy here pay here, where OEM website programs mean nothing to you.
  • You want month to month rather than a term you have to argue your way out of.

The messaging overlap, examined honestly

This is the real head to head, so here is the distinction that matters.

A website chat product is optimized for the visitor who is on your site right now. It catches attention, answers a question, and turns an anonymous session into a name and a number. That is genuine value and a good chat product earns its keep.

What we do starts one step later and runs much longer. A conversation that begins in our free live chat widget becomes a lead record, and from there it lives in the same thread as every text, call, email and voicemail that follows for the next eighteen months. RCS delivers a branded, richer message on handsets that support it and falls back to plain SMS automatically on the ones that do not, so nobody is left out of a campaign because of their phone. Calls are recorded and transcribed, which means a manager can read a twelve minute conversation in thirty seconds instead of scrubbing audio. Follow up processes keep the cadence running when the salesperson forgets.

Ask both vendors the same question: after the first conversation ends, what happens on day three, day nine and day forty. The answers will not sound alike.

Digital retailing numbers versus desking numbers

The other overlap worth pressing on is money math, because a payment shown online and a payment a desk manager will honor are not always the same number, and that gap is where deals die in the box.

Digital retailing tools present payments on the vehicle detail page. Whether those figures reconcile with how your desk actually structures a deal depends entirely on how the tool is configured and what it knows about tax, fees and trade. Ask the vendor to show you a lease in a state with an unusual tax method and see what happens.

Our desking tool is the store side of that same problem. It covers loan and lease, a fifty state tax matrix, semimonthly frequency, trade in credit caps and three lease tax methods, and it produces a customer facing deal page with e signature so the number the customer sees is the number the desk built. A print suite backs it up for the ones who want paper.

Neither approach is wrong. The mistake is running both without checking that they agree.

Questions to take into both demos

Same list, both vendors, ours included.

What is the all in monthly cost with every module I need, and what is the renewal price? What is the term and how do I cancel? If I leave, what exactly can I export, in what format, and does communication history come with it? Who owns the customer records and the site content? How long is implementation and what does my team have to do? What does support look like on a Saturday evening? If leads are included, are they exclusive and how is the territory drawn? What happens when a lead is bad?

Get the answers in writing. The vendor willing to be pinned down is usually the one you still want in year three. You can see ours running against live data on the demo, or contact us and ask straight out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can LeadLocate replace my Dealer Inspire website?

No. We do not sell full dealership websites and we are not an OEM approved website vendor. What we do provide is lead pages, which is a landing page builder with per page URL settings, personal salesperson websites, and a free live chat widget you can drop onto the site you already run.

Does Dealer Inspire include a CRM?

It is a website, digital retailing and messaging platform rather than a CRM. Products in the wider Cars.com group are sold separately. Confirm what is in your specific package with the vendor, since packaging changes.

Can I run both at the same time?

Yes, and many stores do. The website stays where it is and website form submissions post into the CRM, where distribution rules assign them and every follow up touch lives in one thread. Decide up front which system holds the customer record so you do not end up with two partial histories.

Is your live chat widget really free?

Yes, it is included for dealer sites and conversations from it become lead records in the CRM. It is not a staffed service, so overnight coverage depends on your automations and your team rather than on an outsourced chat desk.

Do I need an inventory feed or DMS access?

Neither is required to operate, which is why brokers and individual salespeople run on the platform. If you have a feed, Inventory Link can ingest it and advertise your actual vehicles.

Are the leads exclusive, and can you promise a volume?

They are exclusive to your zone and not resold to other dealerships. We cannot guarantee lead counts, close rates or sales results, and any vendor who does is selling you something they do not control.
