CDK Drive Alternative for Car Dealerships
An honest page about a decision we do not sell into: what to shortlist, what it costs, and which half of the problem we can actually solve.
First, the honest disclosure
We are not a dealer management system and we are not going to pretend otherwise to keep you on this page. LeadLocate has no general ledger, no accounts payable or receivable, no payroll, no bank reconciliation, no deal posting to accounting, no floorplan accounting, no parts inventory, no repair order management and no title or registration processing. If any of those are why you are searching, we are not your answer and you should evaluate an actual DMS.
We wrote this page anyway, for two reasons. The first is that dealers searching for a DMS alternative deserve a straight explanation of what the switch involves, and a lot of what is written about it is produced by people trying to sell one. The second is that a meaningful share of stores who go shopping for a new DMS discover, three demos in, that their real frustration was never the accounting system. It was the CRM bolted to it, the lead handling, the phone stack, or the reporting. That is a much smaller and much cheaper problem, and it is the one we solve.
Sort out which of those two you actually have before you spend six months on a conversion.
What CDK Drive is built for
CDK Drive is a long established dealer management system used widely across franchise dealerships, particularly by larger stores and groups. Its scope is the operational and financial backbone of the business: accounting and the general ledger, deal posting, parts, service and repair orders, payroll, manufacturer reporting, and the integrations that connect all of it to the wider dealership technology market.
That breadth is the point of a DMS, and it is also why switching is hard. The system is not one product, it is the place where every department's data ends up. Your controller, your service manager, your parts counter and your F and I office are all downstream of it.
Packaging, module availability, contract structure and integration fees change over time, and vendor arrangements differ by store size and franchise. Verify anything that will drive your decision directly with the vendor rather than relying on any comparison page, including this one.
The DMS candidates worth shortlisting
If you genuinely need to replace the backbone, these are the systems most often evaluated against CDK Drive in the United States market. We do not sell any of them, we take no fee from any of them, and this is public knowledge rather than a recommendation.
Reynolds and Reynolds is the other long established enterprise option, most common in franchise stores. Tekion is the newer cloud native entrant, usually shortlisted by stores who want a modern interface and a single database across departments. Dealertrack DMS sits in the middle and is often considered by stores wanting a lighter footprint than the enterprise systems. DealerBuilt, Auto Mate, PBS Systems and Autosoft appear on most franchise shortlists as well. On the independent and buy here pay here side, Frazer, DealerCenter and Wayne Reaves are the names that come up most, and they are priced for a very different kind of store.
Score them on the departments you actually run, not on feature counts. Our DMS vendor evaluation scorecard is built for that, and the switching from CDK Drive page covers the sequencing specific to this conversion.
What a DMS switch actually costs
The subscription difference is usually the least interesting number in this decision. The costs that hurt are the ones that never appear in a proposal.
- Data migration. Getting customer, vehicle, service and financial history out in a usable form, and deciding what you are not bringing. This is where timelines slip.
- Parallel running. Most stores run old and new side by side through at least one month end close. Budget for paying twice for a period, and for the staff hours that go with it.
- Integration rebuild. Every third party currently connected to the backbone has to be repointed and retested. Make the list before you start, because it is always longer than anyone expects.
- Training and productivity. The real cost. Expect a dip while a hundred people relearn habits, and expect it to land hardest on your service and accounting teams.
- Month end. Your first close on a new system is slower and more stressful than any other week in the project. Do not schedule it against year end.
The hidden costs page works through the ones stores most often miss, and the migration checklist puts them in order.
Side by side, so the categories are clear
This table is not a scorecard between rivals. It exists so you can see that these two products answer different questions.
| CDK Drive | LeadLocate | |
|---|---|---|
| Category | Dealer management system | Lead generation with a full CRM built in |
| Accounting and general ledger | Core function | Not offered |
| Parts and service operations | Core function | Not offered |
| Lead generation included | Bring your own sources | Exclusive local leads in most plans |
| Communications stack | Verify current capability with the vendor | SMS, MMS, RCS with SMS fallback, VoIP calling, transcription, voicemail drop, email |
| Desking | Verify with the vendor | Loan and lease, fifty state tax matrix |
| Contract | Verify current terms with the vendor | Month to month, no long term contract |
| Entry price | Verify with the vendor | CRM Only from $199, lead programs from $799 |
| Implementation | A dealership wide project | Days, and one store can pilot alone |
Features and pricing change on both sides. Confirm anything decision critical with each vendor before you sign.
Stay with CDK Drive if
There are good reasons to keep the system you have, and a vendor willing to say so is worth more to you than one that is not.
- Your accounting, parts and service departments are running well on it and your controller is not the person asking for the change.
- You are a franchise store with manufacturer reporting requirements tied to the system, and the compliance burden of changing outweighs the irritation of staying.
- Your integration map is deep and stable, and rebuilding it would consume a year of your technology budget.
- Your complaint is really about one module, and it can be replaced without touching the backbone. That is far more common than the industry admits.
- You have a major project already in flight. Two dealership wide conversions in one year is how good general managers lose good staff.
Add LeadLocate if the frustration is on the sales side
Here is the case where you keep the backbone and change the part that is actually annoying you.
You want leads and CRM from one vendor rather than stitching two together. You want exclusive local leads in a territory you choose, delivered to you and not resold to three other stores. You want a communications stack your team will actually use: SMS and MMS with threading, RCS with SMS fallback, click to call with a VoIP softphone, call recording with transcription, voicemail drop, email with a real inbox and bulk sending. You want automations, follow up processes and drip campaigns that keep running when the floor is busy. You want desking that covers loan and lease with a fifty state tax matrix, and customer facing deal pages with e signature so a shopper sees their own numbers on a link rather than a photograph of a worksheet.
Critically, none of that requires you to touch the dealer management system you run. No integration is required to operate, and no inventory feed is required either, which is why this can be piloted at a single store while everything else stays exactly where it is. The CRM and DMS integration page covers how the two layers coexist.
Diagnosing which problem you really have
Spend an afternoon on this before you spend a year on a conversion. Ask each department head one question: what specifically about the current system costs you time every week, and which screen is it on.
Sort the answers into two piles. Anything involving posting, reconciliation, repair orders, parts, payroll or manufacturer reporting belongs to the DMS pile, and only a DMS change fixes it. Anything involving leads not being worked, follow up dying after two touches, texting happening on personal cell phones, calls disappearing, reporting nobody trusts, or desking done in a spreadsheet belongs to the sales layer, and that pile can be fixed in weeks rather than months.
In our experience the second pile is usually taller, and it is almost always the pile that made somebody type CDK Drive alternative into a search bar in the first place. If the piles come out the other way around, you have your answer and you should go run a real DMS evaluation.
Questions to ask every vendor, including us
Take these into each demo and write the answers down. They separate vendors faster than any feature list.
What is the total monthly cost with every module I actually need, and what is the price at renewal? What is the contract length, and what does cancellation involve? Exactly what data can I export if I leave, in what format, and does it include communication history? Who owns the customer data? What does implementation require from my staff, in hours? What does support look like at six on a Saturday evening? If leads are included, are they exclusive to my store, how is my territory defined, and what happens when a lead is bad?
Our answers: month to month with no long term contract, your data is yours and exportable, CRM Only from $199 a month, lead programs from $799, and leads in your zone are delivered exclusively rather than resold. Nothing is filtered or scored, every submitted lead in your zone comes to you, and problems are handled by post delivery replacement review. We cannot guarantee results, because too much of the outcome depends on your inventory, your market and your team. If you want to see it running, book the demo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can LeadLocate replace CDK Drive?
No. CDK Drive is a dealer management system covering accounting, parts, service and manufacturer reporting. We do not build any of that. We replace the lead generation, CRM, communications and desking layer that sits alongside it.
Do we need to integrate LeadLocate with our DMS?
No integration is required to operate, and neither is an inventory feed. That is deliberate, because it means a single store can pilot the platform without a technology project or a queue for vendor engineering time.
What are the main alternatives to CDK Drive?
Reynolds and Reynolds, Tekion, Dealertrack DMS, DealerBuilt, Auto Mate, PBS Systems and Autosoft are the names most often shortlisted by franchise stores. Frazer, DealerCenter and Wayne Reaves come up on the independent side. Verify current capability and pricing with each vendor.
How long does a DMS conversion take?
Plan in months rather than weeks, with at least one parallel month end close. The software cutover is rarely the constraint. Data migration, integration rebuilds and retraining several departments are what set the timeline.
How do we know whether our problem is the DMS or the CRM?
Ask each department head what costs them time each week and on which screen. Posting, reconciliation, repair orders, parts and payroll complaints belong to the DMS. Lead handling, follow up, texting, call tracking, reporting and desking complaints belong to the sales layer.
Can we pilot LeadLocate at one store first?
Yes, and we recommend it. Run one rooftop for three or four weeks on real lead flow, measure time to first response, follow up depth and appointments shown, then decide. Month to month pricing exists so a pilot does not require a group wide commitment.
Fix the sales layer without a dealership wide conversion
We will show you the CRM, the phone stack and the desking engine running alongside the system you already have, and give you a straight number. Month to month, no long term contract.
