Better Car People vs LeadLocate
Two answers to the same complaint about internet leads, sold in completely different shapes. Here is how to tell which shape your store needs.
These are not the same category, and the comparison only works once you admit that
Most head to head pages compare two products that do the same job. This one does not, and pretending otherwise would waste your time.
Better Car People sells a service. You route internet leads to their team, their agents respond by text and email on your store's behalf, they work a cadence, and they hand engaged customers and set appointments back to your floor. The value is that people you do not have to hire, train or cover on a Sunday are doing the answering.
LeadLocate sells software plus, on most plans, the leads themselves. Nobody at our company ever speaks to your customer. Your salespeople work inside a CRM with a full communication stack around it, automation carries the repetitive part of the cadence, and every message, recording and transcript stays in your database.
So the real question is not which product is better. It is whether the gap in your store is people or tooling and lead supply. A store that cannot fill a BDC seat has a people gap, and a CRM will not fill it. A store whose salespeople are already texting customers from personal phones because the system is painful has a tooling gap, and renting more labor to sit on top of that mess makes the reporting worse, not better. If you have not decided which one you have, the in house versus outsourced BDC page is the one to read before this one.
What Better Car People does
Publicly, Better Car People operates in the managed automotive lead response space: human agents supported by automation, responding to a dealership's internet leads by text and email, running follow up over an extended window, and returning appointments. Coverage outside of showroom hours is part of the pitch, which matters because a meaningful share of internet leads arrive when the store is closed.
The honest strength of this model is discipline. An outside team's entire job is speed to first response and cadence persistence. Those are the two habits that decay fastest inside a dealership, because a salesperson with a live customer on the lot will always, correctly, put the phone down. A vendor whose contract depends on touch counts does not have that conflict.
The honest limitation is distance. Someone who has never walked your lot is answering questions about your inventory, your policies and your store's tone, and the depth of that context depends entirely on how well you brief them and how well the handoff works.
Packaging, staffing, coverage hours, ownership and pricing in this category all change over time. Verify current terms with the vendor. We are not going to guess at their price list.
What LeadLocate does
The platform is four products sold as one. Most dealers have only ever seen the CRM part, which is why the rest is worth naming specifically.
The CRM handles lead inbox and detail views, contacts and contact import, lead feeds and custom source feeds, global lead distribution with rules, a blacklist, disputes and quality control requests. Communication runs through an SMS and MMS inbox with threading, RCS with automatic SMS fallback, click to call with a VoIP softphone, call forwarding, trigger calls, voicemail drop with recipient lists, an email inbox with composer and archive, and bulk email. Calls are recorded and transcribed, so a manager reads a long conversation in half a minute rather than listening to it. There is a built in email validator and phone validator, which is the kind of thing dealers are surprised a CRM can do in house.
Automation covers automations and lists, task automation, follow up processes, drip leads with a drip editor, reminders, appointments and a calendar. That is the machine that replaces the mechanical half of what an outside team does for you.
AutoMail is the voice stack: IVR with routing, number and media management, call forwarding, call history and a mail center. SecureWebX handles secure credit applications, apply links you can text to a customer, document collection, identity verification at intake, a versioned consent and compliance module, and worksheets. My Inventory Link ingests your feed and advertises your actual vehicles, with per salesperson inventory sites. Neither an inventory feed nor DMS access is required to operate.
Desking sits inside the CRM: DealTracker and EZ Desking, loan and lease, a fifty state tax matrix, semimonthly payment frequency, trade credit caps and three lease tax methods, plus deal jackets and print templates. The desking tool page covers that engine on its own.

Choose Better Car People if
Real reasons to pick the service, or to keep it if you already have it.
- You have tried and failed to staff a BDC seat in your market, and the chair has been empty long enough that leads are visibly aging.
- Live human response outside showroom hours is the specific thing you are buying, and you have no intention of scheduling people for it.
- Your lead volume swings hard with season or with a campaign calendar, and flexing a fee is easier than hiring and cutting.
- Nobody in the building owns follow up today, and creating external accountability is faster than creating internal accountability.
- You already run a CRM you like and have no appetite for a system change this year.
- The service is producing appointments you can trace to gross. Do not break something that is paying for itself.
Choose LeadLocate if
The case for the platform gets strong when several of these land at once.
- You are buying leads from one vendor, a CRM from a second and response from a third, and you would rather consolidate onto one bill and one database.
- You want exclusive local leads instead of shared internet leads that three stores are working in the same minute.
- You want the full conversation, including call recordings and transcripts, living in your own system rather than summarized back to you.
- You want the acquisition side too. Opt in seller leads come from local owners who filled out a vehicle offer request and asked to be contacted, which is a different pipeline than buyer leads. The seller leads page explains how that works.
- You want individual salespeople able to run on the platform with their own follow up, personal site and mobile workspace.
- Contract length is a sticking point and you want the ability to leave if we stop earning it.
Running both, which is what a lot of stores should actually do
This is not a fight to the death, and treating it as one costs stores money. The two products sit at different layers, and a sensible hybrid is common.
The arrangement that works: LeadLocate is the system of record and the phone stack. Every lead lands there, every message is threaded there, every recording and transcript is stored there. The outside team is scoped narrowly to the window where you genuinely have nobody, typically after close and Sundays, or to overflow when a campaign spikes volume past what your floor can absorb.
Two rules make that hybrid work. First, one owner for first response at any given hour, written on a schedule, so a customer never gets two different opening messages from two different systems within a minute of each other. That double touch is the fastest way to make a store look disorganized. Second, everything the outside team sends has to end up in your database. If it does not, you have paid for a conversation you cannot read, and next month you will be arguing about attribution with no evidence.
Review the split quarterly against one number: appointments shown, by source of first response. If the outside window is producing, keep it. If your own team has grown into the hours, take them back. Let the number decide instead of the contract.
What a switch or a consolidation really costs
The subscription difference is almost never the expensive part. The costs that hurt are the ones nobody quotes.
- Data. Establish before you give notice what you can export and in what format, and whether conversation history comes with it. Your leverage is highest the moment before you sign, and lowest the week you leave.
- Overlap. Budget for paying two vendors for a few weeks. Cutting over with zero overlap is the most reliable way to lose leads during a change.
- Adoption. The real expense. Expect a productivity dip for two to four weeks while people build new habits. That needs management attention, not just a training session.
- Repointing. Every source that posts into your current system has to be aimed somewhere new: website forms, third party lead providers, chat, phone numbers, inventory. Build that list before you start.
- Reporting continuity. Pull the historical reports you will want to compare against next year while you still have access to them.
The CRM migration checklist walks the sequence in order and is written to be used with any vendor, not only with us.
How to decide in thirty days instead of arguing about it
You do not have to bet the store. Pilot, do not rip and replace.
Take one team, or one lead source, and run it on the platform for three or four weeks while everything else stays exactly where it is. Point a defined slice of lead flow at it. Then compare three numbers against the same period under your current arrangement: time to first response, follow up touches per lead before the trail goes cold, and appointments shown. Not appointments set. Shown.
Month to month pricing exists so that this is possible. A vendor who requires a multi year commitment before you are allowed to evaluate is asking you to carry a risk they will not carry themselves. If the pilot goes badly you lost a month and learned something concrete. If it goes well, you expand on evidence.
We cannot guarantee lead counts, close rates or sales results, and you should be skeptical of anyone in this industry who does. What we can do is show you the system running on live flow. Book the demo, or call 844-376-2274 and ask the awkward questions first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is LeadLocate a direct replacement for Better Car People?
Not exactly. It replaces the software and the process layer and adds lead supply, but it does not supply human agents. Nobody at our company talks to your customer. If what you are buying is people to answer leads at nine at night, that part still needs either your staffing or an outside team.
Can we use both at the same time?
Yes, and for many stores that is the right answer. Run LeadLocate as the system of record and phone stack, and scope the outside team to after hours or overflow. Just put one owner on first response per hour so the customer never gets two opening messages.
What does Better Car People charge?
We do not publish competitor pricing, because packaging changes and a stale number would mislead you. Ask the vendor for total monthly cost at your real lead volume, the term length and the cancellation notice, in writing.
Do the leads come with the CRM?
On most plans, yes. CRM Only at $199 a month is software alone. Plans that include exclusive local buyer leads start at $799, Marketplace Acquisitions for opt in seller leads starts at $999, and the Buyers and Sellers Hybrid Plan starts at $1,599.
Are the leads exclusive to my store?
Yes. You choose a territory and every submitted lead inside that zone is delivered to you and not resold to other dealerships. Nothing is filtered or scored. We ask pre-screening questions at capture, and lead problems are handled by post delivery replacement review.
Do we need a DMS integration or an inventory feed to switch?
No. Neither is required to operate, which is why brokers and solo salespeople run on the platform. If you have a feed, Inventory Link can ingest it and advertise your live vehicles, but the CRM works without one.
Compare them on your own lead flow, not on a slide
We will map a territory around your store, run the CRM and the phone stack on live leads, and put response time and shown appointments side by side with what you have now.
