automotiveMastermind vs LeadLocate

These two tools do different jobs. Knowing which job you are trying to fill saves you a quarter of wasted budget.

automotiveMastermind is a predictive marketing platform that mines your existing owner base for sale ready customers and runs targeted campaigns at them. LeadLocate brings new in market leads from outside your base and gives you the CRM to work them. One digs deeper into customers you already have. The other adds customers you do not. Verify current features with each vendor.

Start by naming which problem you have

Most comparison pages assume you already know what you are buying. That assumption is what wastes money in this particular matchup, because automotiveMastermind and LeadLocate are not really competing for the same job. They both end in a customer standing in your showroom, and almost nothing in between is the same.

There are two distinct shortages a store can have. The first is that you are not getting enough out of the thousands of people already in your files, the ones who bought from you four years ago, the ones who service with you and have never been asked about a trade, the ones with equity sitting in a vehicle they do not know is worth anything. That is an owned base problem, and it is solved by better data and better targeting against a list you already own.

The second is that your funnel is too small at the top. You have worked your base, your floor traffic is what it is, and you need more people who are actively shopping right now and do not yet know your store exists. That is an acquisition problem, and no amount of analysis of your own database creates a customer who is not in it.

Be honest about which one you have before you sit through either demo. Buying a predictive tool to fix a volume shortage, or buying leads to fix a follow up discipline problem, are the two most common ways dealerships waste a year.

What automotiveMastermind is built for

automotiveMastermind, now part of S&P Global, is best known for its Mastermind platform: predictive analytics aimed at franchise dealerships, built on the dealer's own data. It pulls from the systems a store already runs, scores customers on how likely they appear to be to transact, and then drives targeted marketing at the ones that rise to the top. Equity position, service history, contract timing and behavioral signals are the kind of inputs the category works from.

The pitch is a daily list. Rather than a salesperson guessing who to call, the platform surfaces a ranked set of owners with a reason attached, and campaigns go out to those households. It has a strong franchise and OEM orientation, and it is widely used by manufacturer aligned stores and larger groups with a substantial owner base to work.

That orientation is a genuine strength, not a footnote. If you are a franchise point with fifteen years of customers in your files, a healthy service drive and a manufacturer program that rewards owner base retention, that data is an asset and a tool built to exploit it can pay for itself without adding a single new lead.

Features, packaging, data requirements and pricing change over time, and no comparison page including this one should be your source of truth. Verify current capability and terms directly with the vendor.

What LeadLocate is built for

LeadLocate comes at the problem from the opposite end. It is a lead generation platform with a full CRM built around it, sold month to month to dealerships and to individual salespeople.

On the lead side you choose a territory around your store and receive exclusive leads inside that zone, meaning they are delivered to you and not resold to three other dealerships. There are two families. Inbound buyer leads come from in market shoppers, and they are a mix of VIN specific inquiries and open shoppers describing what they want in general terms. Opt in seller leads come from local owners who filled out a vehicle offer request and asked to be contacted about selling their car, which is an acquisition channel rather than a listings channel.

Nothing is filtered, scored or quality tested on our side. We ask pre screening questions at capture and deliver every submitted lead in your zone, exclusively, and problems are handled by post delivery replacement review rather than by a promise made in advance. That is a deliberate difference from how the category usually talks, and what to expect from car sales leads explains the reasoning at length.

The CRM side is the part dealers underestimate. Lead inbox and distribution rules, SMS and MMS with threading, RCS with automatic SMS fallback, click to call with a VoIP softphone, call recording with transcription, voicemail drop, email with a real inbox and composer, bulk email, automations and follow up processes, drip campaigns with an editor, appointments and reminders, desking covering loan and lease with a fifty state tax matrix, lead pages, personal salesperson websites, a free live chat widget, an email validator, a phone validator, and three layers of reporting.

Choose automotiveMastermind if

We would rather you stay put than switch and switch back. The case for them is strong when several of these are true.

  • You are a franchise dealership with a deep owner base and years of clean history in your systems, and you know you are underworking it.
  • Equity mining and owner retention are central to how your store makes money, and a manufacturer program rewards you for it.
  • You already have a CRM your team uses well and you are looking for a targeting layer on top rather than a replacement.
  • Your data is genuinely good. Predictive tools amplify whatever they are fed, so a store with reliable service and sales history gets far more out of them than a store with three years of half completed records.
  • Your problem is prioritization rather than volume. You have more names than your team can call and you need to know which twenty to call today.

If you want the equity side without leaving your current stack, our own CRM with equity mining page covers what that looks like from our side, and it is a different depth of product than a dedicated predictive platform.

Choose LeadLocate if

The case for us gets stronger the further you sit from a large, clean, franchise owner base.

  • Your top of funnel is the shortage. You need people who are shopping now and are not already in your files.
  • You want leads and the CRM from one vendor on one bill, instead of paying for a lead source, a CRM and a targeting layer separately and stitching them together yourself.
  • You are independent, used car focused, or a buy here pay here store, and a franchise oriented predictive platform is depth you would pay for and not use.
  • You want exclusive local leads rather than shared internet leads that three stores are dialing at the same moment.
  • You need vehicle acquisition as well as sales, and want opt in seller leads from local owners who asked to be contacted. See car seller leads.
  • You do not have, or do not want to depend on, DMS access or an inventory feed. Neither is required to operate, which is exactly why brokers and individual salespeople run on the platform.
  • Contract length is a sticking point and you want leaving to be a monthly decision.

The honest case for running both

Nothing about these two products is mutually exclusive, and pretending otherwise would be a sales tactic rather than advice.

A large franchise store with a real owner base and a real volume target has both problems at once. The predictive layer works the inside of the funnel and the lead layer widens the top of it. The failure mode is not overlap, it is that a store buys both and never assigns clear ownership, so the daily list and the fresh leads compete for the same salesperson's attention and both get worked at half depth.

If you do run both, split ownership deliberately. One team on the owner base and equity conversations, one on new inbound leads, with distribution rules that keep the two streams from colliding in the same inbox. Global lead distribution with rules, distribution lists and lead history exist for exactly this, and lead history is what settles the inevitable argument about where something went.

Measure them separately too. Blending owner base results and new lead results into one cost per sale hides which of the two is actually carrying you, and that is the number you need next budget cycle.

What to verify with both vendors before you sign

Take these into every demo, ours included. The answers separate vendors faster than any feature grid.

What data does the product require from my systems, who maintains that connection, and what breaks if my systems change? What is the total monthly cost with everything I actually need, and what is the price at renewal? What is the contract length and how do I cancel? What exactly can I export if I leave, in what format, and does it include communication history? Who owns the customer data? If leads are included, are they exclusive to my store, how is my territory drawn, and what happens when a lead is bad? How long is implementation and what does my store have to supply? What does support look like at 6pm on a Saturday?

Write down the answers rather than trusting your memory of a demo. Vendors comfortable being pinned down in writing tend to be the ones still worth having in year three. If you would rather just ask us directly, contact us, or watch the demo first and come with sharper questions.

How to test either one without betting the store

You do not need a full commitment to find out. Pilot instead of switching.

Pick a defined slice of activity and run it on the new tool for three to four weeks while everything else stays exactly as it is. For a predictive platform, that means one team working the daily list and nobody else touching it. For us, it means a territory around one rooftop with lead flow pointed at one group of people. Measure three things on the same period against your current process: time to first response, number of follow up touches before the trail goes cold, and appointments set. Those three tell you more than any presentation.

Month to month pricing exists on our side so this is possible without a negotiation. A vendor who requires a multi year commitment before you can evaluate is asking you to carry the risk they will not. If a pilot fails, you lost a month and learned something real. If it works, you expand on evidence.

One last caution that applies to both products. Neither one fixes a store where leads sit for four hours and follow up stops after two touches. New software makes that problem more visible, which genuinely helps, but the fix is management attention. Switching vendors to solve a discipline problem is how dealerships end up switching again eighteen months later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LeadLocate a replacement for automotiveMastermind?

Not a direct one. They solve different problems: a predictive platform digs into the owner base you already have, while LeadLocate brings new in market leads and provides the CRM to work them. Some stores run both with ownership split between the two streams.

Does LeadLocate score or rank leads the way a predictive platform does?

No, and that is deliberate. Nothing we deliver is scored, filtered or quality tested. We ask pre screening questions at capture and deliver every submitted lead inside your zone, exclusively, with problems handled by post delivery replacement review.

Do we need DMS access for LeadLocate to work?

No. Neither DMS access nor an inventory feed is required, which is why brokers and individual salespeople can run on it. If you do have a feed, My Inventory Link can ingest it and advertise your actual vehicles.

Is LeadLocate an OEM certified CRM?

No. If your manufacturer specifies or strongly prefers a certified CRM and program compliance affects your money, verify those requirements before you consider any change.

Can we keep our current CRM and only take the leads?

Yes. Lead Data Only starts at $599 per month for stores that want the lead flow delivered into a system they already run. Most dealers end up using the included CRM anyway, but it is not a condition.

Which one produces results faster?

We cannot guarantee results from either, and any vendor who does is selling something other than software. In general, an owner base campaign works a list that already exists while new lead flow starts arriving immediately, so the honest answer depends on which shortage you actually have.
