HomeNet Automotive vs LeadLocate: Dealer Software Comparison

One decides how your cars look everywhere they appear. The other decides what happens in the four minutes after someone asks about one.

HomeNet Automotive is a vehicle merchandising and inventory distribution vendor from Cox Automotive. LeadLocate is a lead generation platform with a full CRM built in. They sit on opposite sides of the same shopper, so this is not a choice between substitutes. It is a decision about which half of your funnel is costing you more.

Opposite sides of the same moment

Picture the actual sequence. A shopper is on their phone at nine at night. They find one of your cars, the photos are good, the trim is right, the price makes sense, and they submit a form or send a text.

Everything up to that submit belongs to merchandising. The photo set, the description, the option data, the fact that the vehicle appeared at all on the site they were browsing, and the fact that the price they saw was the price you set two hours ago rather than yesterday. That is what a vendor like HomeNet is for.

Everything after that submit belongs to the demand side. Who the lead goes to, how fast the first message is sent, whether the reply answers the question they asked, what happens on day four when they have gone quiet, whether an appointment gets set, and whether anyone can tell you afterward what happened. That is what we built.

Neither half works alone. Perfect merchandising in front of a store that answers in four hours produces the same disappointing number as poor merchandising, and it costs more. A fast, disciplined follow up operation attached to cars that are badly presented never gets the inquiry in the first place.

So the honest comparison is not feature against feature. It is a diagnosis: which half of that sequence is your constraint right now, and where does the next dollar do more. Capability and terms change on both sides, so verify anything decision critical with each vendor rather than with a comparison page.

What HomeNet does

HomeNet has been in vehicle merchandising a long time and is part of Cox Automotive. Publicly, the work covers inventory management for merchandising, photo and video capture tooling for the lot, VIN decoding and vehicle description building, window sticker data, and distribution of inventory feeds to a wide set of destinations.

The difficulty in that category is not conceptual, it is operational. Every destination wants a different format, refreshes on a different schedule, and has its own rules about photo counts, field lengths and required data. Keeping a few hundred vehicles accurate across all of them, continuously, while prices and status change daily, is a real job. Stores that have tried to run it in house usually stop.

If your cars appear correctly nearly everywhere and price changes propagate quickly, that vendor is doing its job and the value is invisible, which is how infrastructure works. We are not going to argue you out of it, and we do not sell a replacement for it.

Verify current module names, destination coverage and contract terms with the vendor. We will not guess at their packaging on your behalf.

What LeadLocate does

Our product is the demand side, and the surface is wider than most dealers assume.

Leads. You choose a territory around your store, and leads inside that zone are delivered exclusively to you rather than resold to three other rooftops. Inbound buyer leads are a mix of VIN specific inquiries and open shoppers describing what they want. Opt in seller leads come from local owners who filled out a vehicle offer request and asked to be contacted about selling. Nothing is filtered or scored, every submitted lead in the zone is delivered, and lead problems go through post delivery replacement review.

Communication. SMS and MMS with real threading, RCS with automatic SMS fallback, click to call with a VoIP softphone, call recording with transcription, voicemail drop, email with a real inbox and composer, bulk email, and an IVR with call routing through AutoMail.

Discipline. Lead distribution with rules and round robin, automations, follow up processes, drip sequences with a drip editor, task automation, missed lead alerts, appointments and reminders.

Closing and measurement. DealTracker desking covering loan and lease with a fifty state tax matrix, deal jackets, print templates, customer facing deal pages with e signature, lead pages, personal salesperson websites, a live chat widget, an email validator, a phone validator, and three layers of reporting.

On inventory, Inventory Link ingests a feed when one exists and presents live vehicles through a public inventory API and per salesperson sites. It is not a syndication product and we will not describe it as one.

The seam where shoppers actually get lost

If you run both, the interesting part is not either product. It is the join between them, and almost nobody inspects it.

Ask three questions about your own store. When a shopper submits a form on a third party destination, how many minutes pass before a human message reaches them, measured rather than estimated? When that lead arrives, does it carry the vehicle they were looking at, or does it land as a name and a phone number with no context? And when the same person inquires twice on two different cars, do you end up with two records and two salespeople calling them?

Those three failures happen at the seam, and they are invisible in both vendors' reporting because each one shows you its own half. Merchandising reporting shows impressions and inquiries. CRM reporting shows leads worked. Neither shows you the ones that fell in between.

What helps on our side: leads land with the vehicle context attached where the source provides it, distribution rules assign an owner immediately rather than dropping into a shared pile, duplicate lead management keeps one customer as one record, and missed lead alerts surface anything sitting untouched. Source attribution reporting then tells you which destination is producing conversations rather than just clicks, which is covered at inventory source attribution.

Fund merchandising first if

There are stores where the honest advice is to leave us until next quarter, and it is worth saying so.

  • Your vehicles are missing photos, or carry four photos where competitors carry thirty, and the cars look worse online than they do on the lot.
  • Trim and option data is wrong often enough that customers arrive expecting something you do not have.
  • A price change takes hours to appear on the destinations that matter, so you are advertising numbers you no longer stand behind.
  • Cars sit for days between arriving and appearing anywhere, which is dead time you never get back.
  • You are not present on destinations where your market actually shops.

Any of those is upstream of everything we do. A better follow up process cannot rescue an inquiry that never happened, and buying leads to compensate for invisible inventory is an expensive way to avoid fixing the cheap problem.

Fund the demand side first if

The other diagnosis, and in our experience the more common one in stores whose merchandising vendor is competent.

  • Nobody in the store can tell you the average time to first response on last month's leads without building a spreadsheet.
  • Follow up dies after two or three touches, and the sixth and eleventh touches simply do not happen.
  • Salespeople are texting from personal phones, so the store's record of what was said does not exist.
  • Your traffic is thin rather than badly handled, and you want exclusive local leads rather than shared ones that three stores are calling simultaneously.
  • You want an acquisition source that is not the auction, from local owners who asked to be contacted about selling.
  • You are paying separate vendors for leads and CRM and doing the integration work yourself.

If several of those are true, better photos will not move your number much. The seller leads page covers the acquisition side, and automotive CRM for dealerships covers the working side.

Measure before you spend, it takes one week

You can settle this argument with data instead of opinion, and the measurement is cheap.

For one week, record four numbers by hand if you have to. How many inquiries arrived. How many minutes to the first human contact on each. How many total touches each lead received before the trail went cold. And how many appointments were set.

Then look at your inventory the same week. How many units have fewer than twenty photos. How many have a wrong or missing trim. How long from arrival to appearing on your main destinations. How long a price change takes to propagate.

One of those two lists will be visibly worse than the other. That is your answer, and it will be more convincing to your dealer principal than either vendor's presentation.

A caution about expectations. We cannot guarantee lead volume, response rates, appointments or sales, and neither can any merchandising vendor promise what better photos will do to your close rate. Both halves are inputs to a result that depends on your market, your pricing and your people. What both categories can legitimately do is remove a specific, identifiable failure, which is why identifying yours first matters more than the vendor choice.

Read what to expect from car sales leads before you set targets, because shopper behavior surprises stores that have not bought leads before.

What to ask each vendor

Same discipline for both, and ask us the same things.

What is the total monthly cost with everything we actually need turned on, and what is the renewal price rather than the first year price? What is the contract length and the cancellation process? What can we export if we leave, in what format, and who owns it, including photo files on the merchandising side and communication history on ours? What does support look like at 6pm on a Saturday? What is the one thing your product is worst at?

Then the questions specific to each. For a merchandising vendor: which destinations, how fast does a change propagate, who fixes a broken feed and how quickly. For us: are the leads exclusive to my store, how is the territory defined, what happens when a lead is bad, and what do you require from my inventory feed or the dealer management system I run. The answers are yes, a zone you choose, replacement review, and nothing at all.

Pricing is on the pricing page, the demo shows the working side rather than a slide deck, and you can contact us or call 844-376-2274. If a week of measurement says your problem is merchandising, we will tell you to spend the money there instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are HomeNet and LeadLocate competitors?

Not really. HomeNet works on how your vehicles are presented and distributed before a shopper inquires. LeadLocate works on everything from the inquiry onward. Plenty of stores run both, because they cover opposite halves of the same moment.

Can LeadLocate distribute our inventory to third party sites?

No. We are not a syndication vendor. Inventory Link ingests a dealer feed and presents live vehicles through a public inventory API and per salesperson sites, which is a narrower job than feed distribution and merchandising.

Which one should we buy first?

Measure for one week. Compare time to first response and touches per lead against photo counts, data accuracy and how long a price change takes to propagate. Whichever list looks worse is where the next dollar belongs.

Do we need an inventory feed to use LeadLocate?

No, and no DMS access either. A feed is used when one exists, but nothing about the platform requires it, which is why brokers, solo salespeople and stores mid system change can run on it.

Where do leads usually get lost between the two systems?

At the handoff. Vehicle context not carried through, no owner assigned on arrival, and the same shopper becoming two records after two inquiries. Distribution rules, duplicate management and missed lead alerts are aimed at exactly that seam.

Will better follow up increase our sales?

We cannot guarantee it, and no vendor honestly can, because the result depends on your market, pricing and team. What is measurable is whether leads are contacted faster and worked further, and both are entirely within your control.
