Automotive Link Building for Dealerships
A short list of links you can earn locally beats a long list of links somebody sold you.
What link building is, and why a dealership is a special case
Search engines treat a link from another website as a signal that somebody vouched for you. More credible sites vouching for you, particularly ones connected to your area, tend to correlate with better visibility in local results. That is the mechanism, stated as plainly as it can be stated without pretending anyone outside the search companies knows the exact weighting.
Dealerships are unusual in three ways that change the strategy completely. First, your market is a radius, not a country. A link from a national automotive blog is worth less to you than a link from the high school booster club fifteen minutes away, which is the opposite of how link building is sold. Second, you have physical presence and community involvement that most businesses buying links do not have, which means you can earn local links honestly. Third, a huge share of your site is inventory pages that turn over constantly, so link building aimed at individual vehicles is wasted effort.
The consequence is that generic link building tactics are a poor fit for a rooftop. What works is smaller, slower, more local and considerably cheaper than what most agencies quote.
Where we fit, and where we do not
Being direct saves you a call. We are not an SEO agency and we do not sell link building, outreach retainers or content placement. If somebody tells you LeadLocate will build your backlink profile, that is not us.
What we do is everything that happens after a visitor arrives. Lead pages with per page URL settings so a campaign has its own address and its own numbers. A free live chat widget for the site you already run. Instant response and follow up processes so a form submission gets a text in the first minute rather than an email on Monday. And source level reporting so you can tell whether the traffic somebody is billing you for produced appointments.
That distinction matters when you are budgeting. Earned traffic is only worth what your conversion and follow up layer makes of it, and most stores have a much bigger hole there than in their backlink profile. If you have not measured your response time on website leads this quarter, fix that before you sign an SEO retainer. Our page on dealership SEO services covers how to evaluate the wider category.
The links that actually move a rooftop
Six families, roughly in order of value per hour spent, and every one of them is something you can do without an agency.
Local sponsorships you are already paying for. The youth league, the high school program, the charity run, the county fair. You wrote a check. Ask for a link on the sponsor page. Most stores sponsor five or six things a year and get a link from none of them, which is the single most common piece of free money left on the table in dealership marketing.
Chamber of commerce and legitimate local business associations. Real memberships with real listings.
Local news coverage. Not a press release blast. An actual story: a hiring milestone, a community donation, a local event you hosted, an anniversary. Small market outlets need content and will cover a genuine local business story.
Suppliers and partners. Your lender relationships, your insurance partners, your service vendors, your marketing vendors. Many of them keep partner or client pages.
Employee and salesperson presence. Reps with their own professional sites and profiles create real references back to the store.
Genuinely useful local content. A page about registration requirements in your state, a guide to what a specific model costs to insure in your county, a comparison a shopper in your market would actually search for. This is the slowest one and the only one that keeps producing five years later. See content marketing for dealerships for that side of it.
The links that waste money or create risk
Equally important, and a good agency will say the same things.
Bought link packages. A quoted price for a set number of links per month is a network of sites that exist to sell links. Search engines have spent two decades getting good at recognizing those networks. At best you paid for nothing. At worst you inherit a problem that takes a year to unwind.
Directory submissions in bulk. Two or three real local directories are worth having. Three hundred are a signature.
Guest posts on unrelated sites. A finance blog with no connection to your market writing about your dealership fools nobody anymore.
Private blog networks. If a vendor cannot show you the actual site a link will appear on before it is placed, assume the worst.
Links to individual vehicle pages. That page will be gone in six weeks. Point earned links at pages that persist: your homepage, your location page, your model research pages, your finance page.
One test cuts through nearly all of this. Ask whether the link would be worth having if search engines did not exist. If a real local person might actually click it and end up at your store, it is a good link. If not, you are buying a signal rather than a customer, and the market for that signal keeps getting harder to fool.
A realistic first month, done in house
You can do more in four weeks with a spreadsheet than most retainers deliver in a quarter. Here is the order.
- List every organization you gave money to in the last two years. Sponsorships, memberships, event tickets, charity donations. Email each one and ask for a link on their site. Expect roughly half to say yes.
- List every vendor and partner you pay. Ask whether they have a client or partner page and request an entry.
- Claim and clean your listings. Business profile, maps, the two or three local directories people in your market actually use. Make sure the name, address and phone number match exactly everywhere, because inconsistency here undoes other work. See local SEO for car dealerships.
- Write one genuinely useful local page and tell three local organizations it exists.
- Pull your current backlink report from any of the standard tools so you have a baseline to measure against later.
That is a week of somebody's part time attention and it costs nothing beyond what you already spend. Do it before you hire anyone, because it also tells you what an agency would actually be adding.
Measure to leads, not to domain rating
Every SEO vendor reports on the metrics their tools produce. Domain rating, referring domains, keyword positions. None of those pay a technician or a floorplan payment.
Three numbers matter and they all sit downstream. Organic sessions that reached a page capable of converting. Leads created from organic traffic. Delivered units attributable to those leads. That chain is measurable if the intake side is set up correctly, which is exactly the part most stores skip.
The practical mechanics: point campaigns and content at pages with proper source handling so the lead arrives tagged, then look at the funnel by source rather than in total. Contacted, appointments set, appointments shown, units. A source that generates traffic and never produces a shown appointment is either sending the wrong people or landing them somewhere that cannot convert. Our page on marketing attribution works through the chain, and the SEO audit page covers how to check the site side.
Give link building at least six months before judging it. Anyone promising position changes in thirty days is describing something other than link building, and you should ask what.
How to buy this without getting burned
If you do hire out, these questions separate the good firms from the invoice generators quickly.
Ask to see the actual sites they placed links on for a client in a similar market, not a metrics screenshot. Ask whether they pay for placements and how much. Ask what happens to the links if you stop paying, because rented links disappear and take the effect with them. Ask who writes the content and whether it is original. Ask what they will not do and why, since a firm with no boundaries has no judgment. Ask for the contract term and the cancellation process in writing.
Then ask the question almost nobody asks: what do you need from us? A link building program that requires nothing from the dealership is not building local links, because local links come from local relationships that only you have. If the answer is nothing, they are buying placements somewhere.
What happens after the click, which is where the money is
A dealership that ranks and then handles the resulting lead badly has bought an expensive way to disappoint people. This is the part we can genuinely help with.
Send earned traffic to a page built to convert rather than to a homepage carousel. Lead pages give each campaign or topic its own address, its own message and its own set of numbers, and a submission becomes a real lead record inside the CRM that routes through your distribution rules instead of an email to somebody's alias.
Behind the form, automations, task automation, follow up processes and drip campaigns run the cadence a busy Saturday would otherwise destroy. Messaging covers SMS and MMS with proper threading, RCS with automatic SMS fallback, click to call with a VoIP softphone, call recording with transcription and voicemail drop. A phone validator and an email validator catch bad contact data before your team spends an afternoon on a typo. And a free live chat widget catches the organic visitor who will never complete a form but will type a question.
None of that improves your rankings. All of it decides whether the rankings were worth paying for.
What we cost, and what we are not selling you
To be clear one more time: there is no link building line item here, because we do not sell one. What you are buying is the platform. CRM Only starts at $199 a month if you have your own traffic and lead sources. Plans that include exclusive territory leads start at $799, and combined buyer and seller programs start at $1,599. Month to month with no long term contract. Figures are on the pricing page.
The honest sequencing advice: fix the conversion and follow up layer first, because it works immediately and it makes every future marketing dollar worth more. Do the free local link work yourself in month one. Then, if you still want to invest in earned search, hire a firm against a baseline you already established rather than one they hand you.
We cannot guarantee rankings, traffic or units from any of this, and neither can anyone else honestly. Search results are controlled by companies none of us work for.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does LeadLocate do link building or SEO work for dealerships?
No. We do not sell link building, outreach retainers or content placement. We provide the conversion and follow up layer that earned traffic lands in: lead pages, live chat, instant response, follow up processes and source level reporting.
What is the highest value link a dealership can get?
A sponsor page link from a local organization you already write a check to. Most stores sponsor several things a year and never ask for the link, which makes it the cheapest available win in dealership marketing.
Are paid link packages worth it?
We would avoid them. A quoted price for a set number of links per month describes a network built to sell links, which search engines have spent two decades learning to recognize. At best you paid for nothing lasting.
How long before link building shows results?
Six months is a realistic window for meaningful movement, and it varies by market and competition. Anyone promising position changes in thirty days is describing a different activity, so ask them exactly what.
Should we point links at individual vehicle pages?
No. Those pages disappear when the car sells. Aim earned links at pages that persist, such as your homepage, location page, finance page and model research content.
What should we measure instead of domain rating?
Organic sessions reaching a page that can convert, leads created from organic traffic, and delivered units from those leads. Set the source at intake so the chain can be traced, then read the funnel by source rather than in total.
Make the traffic you already earn worth more
We will show you lead pages, instant response and source level reporting running together, so the visitors you work hard to earn stop landing somewhere nobody owns. Month to month, no long term contract.
