What to Expect From Car Seller Leads

This guide covers how seller leads reach your store, how many a lead set brings, which vehicles you can target and how to turn each request into a purchase.

Expect real owners who asked a dealership for an offer and agreed to be contacted, so your call is expected. Seller leads arrive in lead sets of 40 to 60 leads a month, at least 40 per set, every one exclusive to your store. Some owners want a straight sale, some want to trade toward their next vehicle, and plenty still owe on a loan. Each of those is a valid seller lead.

Where seller leads come from

Owners in your market check what their car is worth every day. They request an offer from Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer, Carvana or CarMax, or compare online car buyers in search results. Our campaigns reach those same owners on the major advertising platforms, from search and social media to native apps, display and maps, so your store competes for cars that would otherwise go to a national buyer.

Our proprietary technology analyzes how the big instant offer services reach owners and aims your campaigns at the same audiences. You can also add the Browses vehicle marketplaces and Browses local classifieds audiences in Leads Manager, which takes your ads to owners who are selling on their own. Wherever an owner first sees you, they become a lead only after they opt in through our chat, text, email or offer request pages, so a seller lead is never a name pulled from a listing or a list.

Every seller lead is exclusive to your store, never resold, recycled or shared with another dealer, and our autoresponder makes the first contact attempt for you from your store's LeadLocate phone number.

How many seller leads you get

Seller leads are sold by lead count, the same way as buyer leads. A lead set brings 40-60* seller leads a month, and you add sets whenever you want more cars. Volume comes from the number of sets on your plan, not from the size of your Market Area. The Buyers & Sellers Hybrid Plan starts with one set of buyer leads and one set of seller leads, and every extra set can go to either side.

Each set delivers at least 40 qualifying seller leads a month. If a month ends short, your campaign keeps running into the next month at no charge until the set is delivered, and busy months can bring more than 60 at no extra cost.

*40-60 is the monthly range for each lead set. The minimum and carryover rules are in Section 8.8 of the Terms of Service.

The vehicles you can target

In Leads Manager you set the model years, mileage and title status your seller campaigns go after. Every campaign starts at the tightest window available, and you can widen any setting at any time.

SettingWhere it startsHow far you can widen it
Model years10 model years old or newer, counted from the current year12, 15 or 20 years, or any year
Mileage125,000 miles or less150,000, 175,000 or 200,000 miles, or any mileage
TitleClean title onlyAny title, including branded titles
Market Area25 miles around your store30, 40 or 50 miles
Makes and modelsEvery make and modelAlready as wide as it gets

Ten model years and 125,000 miles are the tightest settings on purpose. A program built only around three year old cars with 30,000 miles would chase a sliver of the market and leave your lot short. Widen the years or the mileage to reach more owners, and widen the Market Area when your buyers will drive or send a truck farther for the right car.

Be ready for straight sales, trades and payoffs

Owners reach out for different reasons. Some want a check for their car and nothing else. Some want to trade toward something newer, bigger or smaller, some are chasing a lower monthly payment, and many still owe on the car. The mix changes from month to month, so plan for every one of them.

  • Buy outright when the owner wants a straight sale.
  • Take trade-ins, and put the owner in their next vehicle when they want to trade.
  • Pay off loans with the owner's lender, and leases too where the leasing company allows it.

What makes a seller lead valid

Seller leads follow the same 3-Point Quality Test as buyer leads. Every seller lead is:

  1. A local owner inside your Market Area.
  2. Reachable, with valid contact information.
  3. Actively looking to sell or trade the vehicle, and asking for an offer, at the time the lead was captured.

The year, mileage and title the owner enters must also fall inside your vehicle settings. A lead outside them still arrives, free and outside your count, so you never miss a car. A lead that fails any of the three points comes off your count through our replacement review and is replaced.

What never makes a seller lead bad

Most sellers start high, and almost every one compares more than one offer. That is normal, and it is where a good buyer earns the deal. Each of these is still a valid seller lead:

  • The owner expects more than your first offer.
  • The owner prefers a trade, still owes on the car, owes more than it is worth, or leases it.
  • The car shows wear, needs mechanical work or has an accident history on a clean title.
  • The owner is weighing your offer against others, or sold elsewhere after you received the lead.

How to turn an offer request into a purchase

  1. Call fast. The owner asked for a number, and a quick, solid number is what earns the appointment.
  2. Confirm the details: year, mileage, title, payoff and condition, then ask what they plan to drive next.
  3. Give an offer range and invite them in for a quick appraisal, or arrange to see the car where it is.
  4. Have payoff and trade numbers ready, so an owner who wants to trade can drive home in their next vehicle the same day.
  5. Reach every owner by call, text and email on different days during the first seven days, and log it all in the CRM. That history is what our replacement review reads if a lead ever needs one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are seller leads exclusive to my store?

Yes. Every seller lead is delivered to your store only and is never resold, recycled or shared with another dealer.

Can I limit seller leads to newer, low mileage cars?

Down to 10 model years, 125,000 miles and clean titles, which is exactly where every seller campaign starts. That window is what fills your lead set with cars you can buy, and every make and model stays included.

Why would I widen my Market Area?

To reach owners farther from your store. Every seller campaign starts at 25 miles, and widening to 30, 40 or 50 miles adds owners in the next towns over, which helps when your buyers will drive or send a truck for the right car. Your lead sets still set the count; a wider area gives your campaign more owners to reach.

What are the marketplace and classifieds audiences?

Two audiences you can add in Leads Manager, named Browses vehicle marketplaces and Browses local classifieds. With them on, your ads also reach owners who are selling their car on their own. Those owners become leads only after they opt in to receive a dealer offer.

What if a seller's car falls outside my settings?

You still get the lead, at no charge, and it does not use up your lead set. Only leads inside your model year, mileage and title settings count.

Does Marketplace Acquisitions include the CRM?

Yes. Every plan with leads includes the full LeadLocate CRM, so seller leads land in one inbox with texting, calling, email and appointment tools ready to work them.
