Used Car Advertising Campaigns
Every used car is one of one. Campaigns that ignore that fact spend money teaching shoppers your name and nothing else.
A used car campaign is not a new car campaign with different photos
New car advertising sells a trim level. There are forty of them on the ground and another truckload coming, so the message can be about payment, rebate and availability, and it stays true for a month.
Used is a different animal. Every car is one of one. It has a specific mileage, a specific history, a specific set of options and a shelf life that starts the day it hits the lot. The moment it sells, the ad behind it is worse than useless, because it sends a shopper to a page that says the car is gone and teaches them not to trust your listings.
That single difference should drive the whole plan. Used campaigns need to be fed from live inventory rather than from a creative brief, they need to turn over as the lot turns over, and they need to be measured per unit and per day rather than per quarter. Stores that run used advertising the way they run new advertising end up paying to build general brand awareness in a market where the shopper is comparing a specific car against three specific cars on a phone at ten at night.
The good news is that the mechanics are not hard. They are just unglamorous, and they have to run every week rather than every campaign season.
Start from the inventory, not from the idea
Before anyone writes a headline, sort the lot into three groups, because each one wants a different campaign.
Fresh units. Days one through roughly two weeks. These need reach and speed. The photos, the description and the listing quality do most of the work, and the campaign job is simply making sure the right local shoppers see the car while it is still new to the market.
The middle of the lot. Cars that have had their moment and are still sitting. These are the ones that respond to being repositioned rather than re-advertised: better photos, a walkaround video, a payment framing, a different audience.
Aged units. Past your policy line, wherever you set it. These need a decision more than they need advertising, and the campaign question is whether another dollar of ad spend beats wholesaling the car this week. Spending advertising money to defend a stocking mistake is a common and expensive habit.
Inventory Link ingests your live feed with VIN, trim, mileage, price and photos, and advertises the vehicles you actually have. If you do not have a feed, the platform still runs, because a feed is not required to operate, which is why brokers and single point independents use it. Our page on used car stocking strategy covers the buying side of the same problem.
The channels, and what each one is honestly good at
Nobody needs another chart claiming a channel mix percentage. What helps is knowing the job each channel does well.
Search. Highest intent, highest cost, and the place a shopper goes when they already know the year and model they want. Vehicle level ads work here when the feed is clean and the landing page matches the ad. If the shopper clicks a specific car and lands on a generic inventory page, you have paid for the click and thrown away the visit.
Social and video. Lower intent, cheaper reach, and much better at making somebody who was not shopping today start shopping. Walkaround video does disproportionate work here because used buyers are trying to assess condition through a screen.
Retargeting. The cheapest useful spend most stores run, and the one most often set up once and never revisited. Cap the frequency and stop showing sold units.
Your own database. Not a channel most people count, and usually the highest return per dollar in the building.
We supply a paid ads module with targeting, plus SMS and email campaigns, campaign lists and bulk email with recipient management. The social advertising and retargeting pages go deeper on the paid side.
The campaign you already paid for: your own customer list
Most stores have several thousand people who have already bought from them, plus everyone who came in and did not buy, plus everyone who called and never came back. That list costs nothing to reach and converts better than anything you can rent.
Four campaigns are worth building once and running forever. Equity customers whose payoff and current value line up for a change. Lease maturities on a calendar. Unsold showroom traffic from the last ninety days, which is the group stores abandon fastest. And service customers whose vehicle is aging out, which is where the trade you need to stock is sitting right now.
The tooling is straightforward. Segment the list, build the message once with SMS campaigns or email campaigns, and let automations and drip processes run the cadence so a busy week does not kill it. Recipient management on bulk email keeps a campaign from going to people who should not be in it.
Two hygiene tools matter more here than anywhere else, because a customer database ages badly. The email validator and the phone validator check contact data before a campaign sends, which protects your sending reputation and stops your team burning an afternoon on dead numbers. Most dealers do not know a CRM can do this in house. See equity mining campaigns and service retention marketing for those plays in detail.
Where the click lands decides whether the money worked
The single most common waste in used car advertising is a good ad pointing at a bad destination. A shopper clicks a specific 2021 crossover with 38,000 miles and arrives at a search results page with 180 vehicles on it. That visit is gone.
Lead pages are a landing page builder inside the platform with per page URL settings, so you can build a destination that matches the promise. One vehicle, or one narrow set, or one offer. The form asks for what you will actually use rather than nine fields nobody fills on a phone. The page loads fast because most of your traffic is on a phone with two bars in a parking lot.
Two details worth stealing. Put the phone number where a thumb naturally sits, because a meaningful share of used shoppers would rather call than type. And use a real prescreening question or two at capture rather than a longer form, so the conversation starts somewhere useful.
Salespeople can also run personal sites and a free live chat widget sits on your main site, so a shopper who wants to ask about a specific car mid browse can do it without filling anything in. The chat conversation lands in the same inbox as everything else.
Speed of response is part of the campaign, not a separate topic
Ad performance and follow up performance get discussed as if they are different departments. From the customer's side they are one experience. A great ad followed by a four hour silence produces the same outcome as no ad at all, and you paid for the click.
The mechanics that matter are unglamorous. The lead has to arrive in one inbox rather than four. It has to be assigned to a person automatically instead of sitting unclaimed. The first response has to be a real message rather than an autoresponder that says we received your inquiry. And the second, third and fifth touches have to happen without anyone remembering, which is what follow up processes and drip sequences are for.
Text carries most of this traffic now. SMS and MMS with real threading, RCS with SMS fallback so branded messages reach handsets that support it without excluding anyone, and click to call with a VoIP softphone for the moment a conversation should become a voice. Every touch writes to the same customer record, so the salesperson picking it up at 4pm sees the whole history. Our explainer on what to expect from car sales leads is worth reading before you judge any campaign by its first week.
Advertise to buy cars, not only to sell them
The used car business is a buying business, and most stores put their entire advertising budget on the selling side. When auction prices move against you, the campaign that acquires vehicles is worth more than the one that moves them.
Seller leads on our side are inbound and opt in. A local owner fills out a vehicle offer request on one of our own pages and asks to be contacted by a dealership. Nothing is harvested from anywhere and nothing is scraped. You define a zone around your store, and offer requests inside that zone come to you exclusively rather than being resold around town.
Run the acquisition campaign the same way you run a sales campaign. A dedicated landing page with a clear offer to appraise, a fast response, and a follow up cadence for the owner who was curious in March and ready in June. Your own service drive and sold customer list belong in the same campaign, because the cleanest used car you will buy this month is one you sold two years ago.
The seller leads page explains how opt in acquisition works, and trade in acquisition marketing covers the campaign side.
Measuring it without fooling yourself
Used car advertising is measured badly almost everywhere, usually because the numbers that are easy to get are the ones that flatter the spend.
Impressions and clicks tell you the ad ran. Form fills tell you the page worked. Neither tells you whether you sold a car. The measurements worth arguing over are calls and appointments per source, appointment show rate, cost per sold unit by channel, and days to sale on units that were advertised individually versus units that were not.
Attribution in this business is genuinely messy and any vendor who tells you otherwise is selling something. A customer sees a social ad, searches your name three days later, calls the store from a listing site, and shows up on Saturday. Every platform involved will claim that sale. Use tracking numbers by source so calls are attributed at the number level, keep your campaign source data clean at capture, and treat any single platform's self reported number as a claim rather than a fact.
Three reporting layers cover activity, store performance and a management roll up. We cannot guarantee what any campaign produces, because that depends on your inventory, your pricing and your market. What we can do is make sure the number you argue about at the Monday meeting came from your own system. See marketing attribution software for that side.
Budget, plans and how stores usually start
The pattern that works is narrow and repeatable rather than broad and impressive. Pick your fifteen highest opportunity units, not the whole lot. Build one landing destination per group of them. Run one database campaign a week against a defined segment. Review it every Monday with the same four numbers. Expand once something is clearly working.
On our side, CRM Only starts at $199 a month if you have your own lead sources and want the campaign, messaging and reporting tools. Inbound buyer lead plans start at $799, Marketplace Acquisitions for the seller side starts at $999, and the Buyers and Sellers Hybrid Plan starts at $1,599. Lead Data Only is $599 and Skip A Month is $199 for stores with seasonal swings. Everything is month to month with no long term contract, and we operate in the United States only.
No inventory feed and no access to the dealer management system you run is required to get started, though a feed makes vehicle level advertising much stronger. Detail on the pricing page, or call 844-376-2274 and ask.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you advertise our actual vehicles or just generic offers?
Your actual vehicles. Inventory Link ingests your live feed with VIN, trim, mileage, price and photos and advertises the specific cars you have. A feed is not required to use the platform, but it makes vehicle level advertising considerably stronger.
How fast should we respond to a campaign lead?
As fast as you can staff, and the useful target is minutes rather than hours. The platform assigns leads automatically, sends the first message from a template, and runs the follow up cadence with drip processes so touches three through eight still happen on a busy week.
Can we run campaigns to our existing customer list?
Yes, and it is usually the best return in the building. Segment the list, build SMS or email campaigns once, and let automations run the cadence. Run the email validator and phone validator over the list first, because customer databases age badly.
Are the leads from your plans exclusive to our store?
Yes. You define a zone around the store and every submitted lead inside it is delivered to you and not resold to other dealerships. Nothing is filtered or scored, and lead problems are handled by post delivery replacement review.
How do you attribute a sale to a campaign?
Source data captured at the lead, tracking numbers by source for calls, and reporting across activity, store and management views. Attribution in retail automotive is genuinely messy, so treat any single ad platform's self reported number as a claim rather than a fact.
Will this increase our used car sales?
We cannot guarantee sales results, and no vendor honestly can, because inventory, pricing and market conditions drive most of it. What the tooling does is make the disciplined version of used car advertising the easy one to run every week.
Run one used car campaign properly before you run ten
We will map a zone around your store, build a landing destination against your live inventory, and show you the reporting behind it. Month to month, no long term contract.
