Dealer Website Lead Attribution Software

Your website is not one lead source. It is a dozen of them wearing the same name tag.

Dealer website lead attribution means knowing which page, form, phone number or chat produced each lead, rather than filing everything under one website source. LeadLocate does this with per source lead feeds, lead pages that carry their own source, tracked call handling and reporting that follows a lead to the appointment and the deal.

Your website is not one lead source

Open your current reporting and look at how much of your lead volume sits under a single line item called website. In most stores it is somewhere between a third and half of everything, and it tells you nothing you can act on. A shopper who filled out a payment estimator on a specific VIN detail page, a shopper who submitted a general contact form from the homepage, a service customer who used a scheduling form, and a trade appraisal request all landed in the same bucket. They are not the same lead, they do not close at the same rate, and they should not be worked the same way.

That single bucket is the reason most website spending arguments never get settled. Your web vendor points at total form submissions. Your ad agency points at sessions. Your general manager points at last month's sold count and asks why they do not line up. Nobody is lying. They are describing different things with the same word.

Attribution at the website level means breaking that bucket apart at the moment of capture, not trying to reconstruct it later from a report. Once a lead lands in the CRM under one generic source, the detail is gone for good. There is no clever query that recovers it. This is why the fix has to happen at the front door.

Give every path its own front door

The practical mechanism is unglamorous. Every distinct way a shopper can raise their hand on your site gets its own intake path, and each path writes its own source value into the CRM automatically.

LeadLocate supports this through lead feeds and custom source feeds. A feed is a defined intake channel with its own identity, so your VIN detail form, your trade appraisal request, your finance application entry point and your general contact form can each arrive as themselves. Global lead distribution rules then route by feed, which is a second benefit most stores do not expect. A trade request can go to your used car manager while a finance inquiry goes to a specialist, without anyone sorting an inbox by hand.

Set this up once and your reporting problem changes shape. Instead of asking whether the website works, you are asking whether the finance page converts better than the trade page, and whether the leads from one close at a rate that justifies the traffic you are buying for the other. Those are questions with answers. Our page on CRM lead source attribution covers the CRM side of the same discipline in more detail.

Landing pages beat query parameters for source integrity

The common approach is to tag campaign links with parameters and hope the value survives the trip through the form. It often does not. Shoppers open a link, browse for eleven minutes, land on a different page, come back a day later from a bookmark, or arrive on their phone and finish on a laptop. The parameter falls off somewhere in that journey, and you attribute the lead to direct traffic.

A destination is more durable than a tag. If a campaign points at a page that exists only for that campaign, then any lead submitted on that page carries its source by construction, with no parameter to lose. LeadLocate includes lead pages, which is a landing page builder with per page URL settings, so you can stand up a page for a specific model, a specific offer, a specific market or a specific ad set and know exactly what produced anything it captures.

This also gives you a clean test surface. Two pages, two headlines, same traffic split, and the difference in submissions is real rather than inferred. Most dealer sites cannot be tested this way because the vendor controls the template, which is exactly why a separate page layer is worth having even when your main site is fine. There is more on the site itself in dealer website conversion rate optimization.

The phone is where website attribution usually collapses

Here is the number that ruins most website reports. A large share of the shoppers your website produces never fill out a form at all. They read the vehicle page, decide they want to know whether it is still on the lot, and call the number printed at the top of the screen. If that number is the same number on your billboard, your radio buy and your third party listings, the call is unattributable the moment it rings.

Separating call traffic by source is the single highest value change most stores can make to their website reporting. AutoMail provides the inbound voice layer: IVR with routing, call forwarding, number and media management, and call history. Calls arrive into the platform rather than into a personal cell phone, which means they exist as records you can count, review and attribute.

Call recording with transcription then closes the loop between attribution and coaching. A manager can read what happened on a two minute call in about twenty seconds and see whether the caller asked about a specific vehicle, which is often the only evidence you will ever get that a website page did its job. Our call tracking page goes deeper on the phone side.

Chat, text and the widgets nobody counts

Every dealer site accumulates widgets. Chat, a payment calculator, a trade tool, a finance pre-application, a schedule service button, sometimes two of each from different vendors. Each one captures shoppers, and each one tends to report its own numbers in its own dashboard, which is how a store ends up counting the same shopper three times and still cannot say what the site produced.

Bring the capture into one place. LeadLocate includes a free live chat widget for dealer sites that writes conversations into the same CRM as everything else, so a chat lead is a lead with a source rather than a transcript in a separate tool. Text is handled the same way, with SMS and MMS threading plus RCS messaging with SMS fallback, so a shopper who starts a text from a mobile page is a tracked conversation rather than a message on somebody's phone.

The rule to enforce with any vendor: if a widget cannot post into your CRM with a distinct source value, it is not a lead channel, it is a lead leak. Ask that question before you install anything else. Live chat for car dealers explains what to look for.

Keeping the source attached through to the deal

Attribution that stops at the lead is only half the work, and it is the half that misleads you. Source to lead volume rewards whatever channel produces the most low intent submissions. Source to appointment and source to delivered unit reward the channels that produce buyers. Those two rankings are frequently different, and acting on the first one is how stores cut the campaign that was actually working.

Because the CRM carries the lead from first contact through communication, appointments, desking and the deal jacket, the source value travels with the customer instead of being replaced by whoever last touched the record. Three reporting layers sit on top of that: activity reporting for what individuals did, company reporting for store performance, and management reporting for the roll up.

One honest limit worth stating. Matching a lead to a sold unit is far more reliable when the deal is desked inside the platform, because the record is continuous. If your deals are worked entirely in another system and never touch the CRM, your final match will depend on manual marking, and manual marking decays under pressure. Set that expectation with your team before you promise anyone a closed loop report.

Reading the numbers without fooling yourself

A few habits separate useful website reporting from theater.

Do not judge a channel on last click alone. The last thing a shopper touched before submitting is usually your own brand search or your own homepage, which will make your website look responsible for leads that another channel created. Last click is convenient and it quietly defunds the top of your funnel.

Watch time to first response by source, not just volume. Some sources arrive at 9pm and some arrive at 11am, and a source that looks weak is sometimes a source your team never answers quickly. That is a staffing finding disguised as an attribution finding.

Count duplicates deliberately. The same shopper submitting three forms is one opportunity, not three, and any report that inflates volume will eventually inflate your budget. Contact deduplication against the existing customer profile matters more than most dashboards admit.

Validate the contact data. A source producing plenty of leads with dead phone numbers and typo email addresses is not producing what the count suggests. The built in phone validator and email validator let you check that before you draw a conclusion about a channel.

A three week plan to fix it

You do not need a data project. You need three weeks of discipline.

Week one, inventory the doors. Walk your own site as a shopper and write down every way you can reach the store: each form, each phone number, chat, text, the finance application, the trade tool, the service scheduler, and anything a vendor added that you forgot about. Most stores find between eight and fifteen. Note which ones currently arrive with a distinct source and which collapse into one bucket.

Week two, split the sources. Give the important paths their own feed, set distribution rules so each one routes to the right person, and put a tracked handling path on the phone traffic. Stand up dedicated lead pages for any campaign you are actively spending money on.

Week three, read the first honest report. Do not change anything yet. Look at volume by source, then appointment rate by source, then contact quality by source. Where those three disagree is where your money has been going wrong. Then, and only then, move budget.

None of this requires a website replatform, an inventory feed or a DMS connection. It runs alongside whatever site you have today, which is the point.

What it costs and what we will not claim

CRM Only starts at $199 a month if you already have traffic and lead sources and simply want the capture, routing and reporting layer. Plans that include exclusive local buyer leads start at $799, seller programs at $999, and the combined Buyers and Sellers Hybrid Plan at $1,599. Everything is month to month with no long term contract, and current figures live on the pricing page.

What we will not claim: that attribution will increase your close rate by itself, or that any model resolves every path a shopper takes. It will not. Walk in traffic, word of mouth, a shopper who saw your billboard and searched your name, and the customer who was sent by their brother in law are all real and none of them will ever be measured cleanly. Anyone selling you a perfect closed loop is selling a model, not a measurement.

What honest website attribution does is narrow the guesswork enough that your spending arguments have evidence in them. That is worth a great deal, and it is achievable in a month. If you want to see the feeds, the lead pages and the reporting running before you decide, contact us or watch the demo first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to replace my dealership website to get this?

No. The capture, routing and reporting layer runs alongside whatever website platform you use today. Lead pages are an addition for campaigns, not a replacement for your main site, and no inventory feed or DMS connection is required.

How do you attribute phone calls that come from the website?

Calls are handled through AutoMail with IVR, routing and call history, so they exist as records rather than as calls to a personal cell phone. Recording with transcription then lets a manager confirm in seconds what the caller was actually asking about.

Will this tell me which ad campaign produced a sold unit?

It will get you much closer than a generic website bucket, especially when the campaign points at its own lead page and the deal is desked in the platform. No attribution model captures every path, and we will not pretend otherwise.

What is the difference between this and Google Analytics?

Analytics measures sessions and behavior on the site. This measures people, from the moment they raise a hand through appointment and deal. You want both, but only one of them can tell you whether a source produces buyers.

Can each lead source route to a different person automatically?

Yes. Global lead distribution rules and distribution lists route by feed, so trade requests, finance inquiries and general contact forms can each land with the right person without anyone sorting an inbox manually.

How long does setup take?

Most stores can split their major sources and see a first honest report inside three weeks. The constraint is usually deciding which paths matter, not configuring them.
